SHERMAN, Texas – The Ladies built a seven-point lead in the second quarter and led at halftime for the third-straight game, but the Warriors battled back and built their own seven-point lead late as Centenary (0-3) fell to Hendrix (2-1) 58-51 on the final day of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference/Southern Athletic Association Classic Sunday afternoon, November 19.

Neither team led by more than three in the first quarter, but a quick 6-0 run turned a three-point deficit into a three-point lead for the Ladies. Down 11-8, senior Samantha Lyons hit a three to tie the game and classmate Jessica Bruti split from the line. Sophomore Deunya Small hit a jumper to cap the spurt.

Small hit a jumper with nine seconds left in the first quarter as Centenary led 18-15 after one. Small finished the first quarter with 10 points – hitting all five shots from the field – and scored a season best 12 for the game.

Hendrix regained the lead with 1:43 left in the second quarter, but junior Jasmine Morris hit a pair from the line and Lyons split to give the Ladies a 29-27 halftime advantage.

Hendrix led for most of the third quarter and 43-40 to begin the fourth, but a three from junior Savanah Doty tied the game with 9:20 left. The Warriors answered with six straight, holding Centenary scoreless for more than seven minutes. Vinessa Daniel made a layup, followed by a layup from Madison Martin three minutes later. Another three minutes passed and another Martin layup gave Hendrix a 49-43 advantage.

After Lyons hit a jumper with 2:08 left, Hendrix’s Leah Smith answered with a three to build the largest lead of the game for the Warriors. A three by Doty brought the game to a single possession with 38 ticks left, but Centenary did not score the rest of the way and Hendrix hit 5-of-6 from the charity stripe to ice the game.

Martin led Hendrix with 14 points and 12 boards. Centenary freshman Haylee Washington just missed her first collegiate double-double with 12 rebounds and eight points.

Centenary returns to action next Saturday, November 25, when it travels to Conway, Arkansas, to take on Hendrix. Game time is set for 2 p.m.
