Ladies unable to get past Austin College

SHREVEPORT, La – Centenary women’s basketball team struggled shooting and would fall 66-58 Saturday afternoon against Austin College. The Ladies (3-10, 2-3 SCAC) dropped their third game in a row, and the lost snaps a two game winning streak against conference opponents. Austin College (7-8, 1-4 SCAC) earned its first conference win of the year.   

A layup by Brittany Stepanski put the Roos up 2-0 to start the game. Vashni Sharp-Moore evened the score with a basket of her own. She would score the first 7 points for the Ladies and had 10 in the first half. The Roos responded with a 5-0 run of their own to regain the lead 9-7. Emmeline Richards two free throws ended the run and knotted the score again. Dionecia Warr’s three pointer tied the game again a few plays later at 12. With 9:21 remaining in the half, a layup by Brooke Melton would put Austin College up for the remainder of the game. The Roo’s largest lead would be eleven after Erin Riley knocked down her fourth straight three pointer. A basket by Rebecca Thompson would cut the deficit 34-28 and that would be the score at halftime.

The Ladies never regained momentum in the second half, but would stay in the game. The first time they got the deficit under double digits was with 6:03 minutes left at eight points. Baskets were not falling for the Ladies, and they never got any closer the rest of the game.  

Sharp-Moore led all scorers with 21 points and was two rebounds shy of her third double-double in a row with 8 rebounds. Warr followed with 13 points, and Thompson added 8 points. Her 15 rebounds were a team high, but the Roos outrebounded the Ladies 53-48. The Ladies struggled for the field, shooting 21 percent compared to the Roos 48 percent.

Making her home debut, Rhonda Martin knocked down a three pointer with 3:08 minutes remaining in the first quarter for her first career and season points as a member of the Ladies. One possession later, Martin would sink another one to give her 6 points on the game.

Riley for Austin College had a huge night making 20 points for a team high and shot 6-for-8 from behind the three-point line. Stepanski was the other Roo player in double figures with 12 points. Brianna Harvey and Melton added 9 and 8 points respectively.

Centenary continues its six game homestand against Southwestern next Friday at 5 p.m
