ABILENE, Texas – The Ladies scored the final seven points of the first quarter and the last eight to end the first half as Centenary (3-2) went on to score a 65-50 win against McMurry (0-3) Sunday afternoon, November 29.

Trailing 9-8 after five unanswered by the home team, the Ladies ratcheted up the defense to score seven points in a little more than a minute to end the first quarter. Senior Briana Edwards grabbed an offensive board and hit a jumper to put Centenary in the lead for good. Edwards came off the bench for seven boards and four points.

After a McMurry miscue, freshman Jasmine Morris recorded the hoop and harm to put Centenary up 13-9 with just 12 seconds left in the quarter. However, the Maroon and White dialed up the pressure and freshman Savanah Doty forced a steal and Morris nailed the jumper at the buzzer to put the visitors up six after one.

Doty led the team with eight boards while Morris hit 10-of-14 from the field, including her only three-point shot, to score a game-best 24 points. This is her fourth 20+ scoring game in five contests to begin her collegiate career as Morris wrestles away the lead in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference in scoring.

Both teams split the first 16 points in the second quarter, but the Ladies defense stymied McMurry the last five minutes as Centenary scored the final eight points. With the Maroon and White up 23-17, Morris split from the line. Both teams went scoreless the next two minutes until Morris grabbed a defensive board and nailed her only triple attempt of the game. Junior DeiAnna Hall and freshman Erin Temple both hit a pair from the line as Centenary took a 31-17 lead into the lockerroom.

Centenary showed to be opportunistic and flex its muscles inside, outscoring the Warhawks 36-16 in the paint for the game. The Ladies also turned 27 McMurry turnovers into 31 points.

McMurry pushed the lead back to single-digits thanks to a 9-2 run to end the third. With the Warhawks down 43-27 with 2:21 left, Haley Welch nailed a jumper and Sierra Maykus hit a triple. Sophomore Samantha Lyons stemmed the momentum with a layup, but Sham Hunter quickly added a layup for the Warhawks. Off a steal, Hunter hit a jumper to cut the lead to single-digits.

Welch led McMurry for the game with 13 points, seven rebounds and six boards. Taylor Russell added a double-double with 14 points, 11 boards and hit all eight free throws taken.

Despite McMurry finishing 11-for-29 from the field (37.9 percent) in the second half, the home team could not overcome a dismal shooting first half and finished the game 29.5 percent (18-for-61) for the game.

Centenary still led by 10 with 2:09 left, but the Ladies hit both shots from the field and 6-for-8 from the line to score 10 unanswered and open a 64-44 lead with 25 seconds left. Lyon hit a triple while Hall grabbed a steal and hit both from the line. After a stop, Hall split from the line and then grabbed a defensive board. Hall hit both from the line to push the Centenary lead to 18. To cap the spurt, Hall grabbed her team-leading fifth steal and went right to the hoop for the score.

McMurry scored 5-of-6 to end the game for the final 15-point spread.

The Ladies return to action next weekend in a rematch at Millsaps. Tip is scheduled for 3 p.m.
