SHREVEPORT, La. – Just a little less than two months and six wins after ending a two season, 50-game losing streak, the Ladies came up just short from recording their biggest win in school history.

The Maroon and White led by as much as eight and had two looks at game-winning baskets in regulation as Centenary (6-8, 1-3 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference) fell short in overtime against #20 Trinity (11-2, 2-0 SCAC) 81-76 Sunday afternoon, January 10, in a thriller in the Gold Dome.

Trinity looked to have the game in hand, up 62-55 with 4:22 left. However, junior Linda Gomez Gil and freshman Savanah Doty nailed back-to-back triples. After a rebounding foul on the Tigers, Doty nailed both free throws to give the Ladies only their second lead of the second half with 1:48 left in regulation.

Doty scored 19 points on 6-for-13 shooting, including a 5-for-11 mark from behind the arc. It is only her third double-digit scoring game of her career and the most since she scored 20 in the season opener against Dallas Christian.

With less than a minute remaining in regulation and Centenary trailing 64-63, freshman Jasmine Morris stepped to line and hit a pair of free throws. Senior Briana Edwards than made a steal near the baseline in Trinity’s offensive end. Edwards outletted to Morris, who was fouled and again and sank both from the line. Trinity missed a three attempt on the other end, but grabbed the offensive board. The Tigers’ Bryony Harris found Elizabeth Balido beyond the arc, who made the three while being fouled. She missed the free throw and sophomore Samantha Lyons grabbed the board.

Morris missed a layup and then a three in the buzzer as the game went in to overtime. She finished the game with career highs in both points (26) and free throws made (13).

Trinity, who only shot 8-for-29 (27.6 percent) from three for the game, made both treys and converted all four free throws for the five-point win.

Centenary shot 7-for-15 (46.7 percent) from the field, including 3-for-5 (60 percent) from distance, to lead by as much as eight in the first quarter. Down 5-4 early, the Ladies scored eight unanswered and held Trinity scoreless for more than four minutes to take the lead. Doty made a layup and Morris split from the line. Edwards hit a jumper and Doty drained a triple to put Centenary up 12-5 with 4:26 left in the quarter. After a made basket by Trinity, Morris hit her only triple of the game to push the Centenary advantage to eight.

The Tigers scored six unanswered, but Lyons hit a three and Trinity failed to get a shot off as Centenary led by five after one quarter of action.

Trinity took its largest lead of the game, 52-44, thanks to nine unanswered in the third, but Centenary score eight unanswered in the end of the third and beginning of the fourth. Senior Rebecca Thompson grabbed a steal and made the hoop with the harm with 20 seconds left. Morris then grabbed a steal and barely beat the buzzer with a layup. After Trinity came up empty in its first possession in the fourth, Doty drained a three to tie the ballgame.

The visitors tried to take control with key runs in the third and fourth quarters. With Centenary up 44-43, Monica Hulguin made a fastbreak layup. She then hit a jumper, followed by a Rebecca Gordon three. Grace Horn grabbed a steal and outletted to Gordon for the fastbreak layup. Trinity led 52-44 with 1:12 left in the third, the visitor’s largest lead of the game.

Holguin had 18 to lead all Tiger starters, while Gordon came off the bench for 15 points. Balido came off the bench for a team-high 21 points.

Up 56-55 in the fourth, Trinity scored six unanswered and recorded a steal in an attempt to increase the lead. After an initial steal by Trinity and an intentional foul, Gordon split from the line and Balido nailed a three.  After a couple of possessions, Balido made a layup to cap the mini spurt. Balido then grabbed a steal, but a missed jumper led to a Doty rebound and Gomez Gil’s first three of the season.

Gordon made a pair of threes and Balido made all four of her free throw attempts in overtime.
