SHERMAN, Texas – The Maroon and White scored the first seven points of the game, but the ‘Roos answered with a 17-5 run and never looked back as Centenary (6-9, 1-4 Southern Athletic Collegiate Conference) lost its first conference road game to Austin College (10-4, 4-0 SCAC) in Sherman, Texas, Friday night, January 15.

Both teams came up empty in their first possession before senior Briana Edwards hit a jumper. Freshman Savanah Doty added a triple and junior DeiAnna Hall hit a pair from the line as Centenary jumped out to a 7-0 lead with 7:33 left in the first. Austin College countered a 25-7 run and never led by less than seven the rest of the game.

Austin College led by 19 with seconds remaining in the third quarter, but the Ladies countered with 11 unanswered to cut the deficit back to eight. Hall split from the line to start the run at the end of the third. In the fourth, senior Rebecca Thompson hit a jumper and Doty made a steal and three. Doty followed with another layup and three to cut bring Centenary within 53-45 with 7:43 left in the game. However, the Maroon and White climbed no closer.

Freshman Jasmine Morris led Centenary with 14 points, while Doty added 11. Edward scored 10 points. Centenary shot 18-for-55 for the game (32.7 percent), but could not overcome a 6-for-27 (22.2 percent) first half.

Trailing 9-5 with 6:25 left in the first quarter, Austin College went on a 12-3 run to take the lead for good. Olivia Cicci hit a triple and an Olivia Bailey layup gave the home team its first lead. Sophomore Samantha Lyons split from the line, but Meghan Lewis hit a jumper and Bryce Frank split from the line. Edwards hit a pair from the line for the Ladies, but Bailey added two layups as Austin College led 17-12 with a minute left in the first.

Centenary was outscored 20-6 in the second as Austin College took a 37-20 lead into intermission.

Kendall Heitmeier added 17 points on 5-for-10 shooting and made all 6 free throws for 17 points. Bailey came off the bench for 12 points and a team-leading six boards and five steals.

Centenary returns to action Saturday, January 16, against Dallas. Tip is scheduled for 6 p.m.
