FARMERS BRANCH, Texas – The Ladies only led by two at half, but the Maroon and White outscored the Crusaders 41-17 in the second half as Centenary (5-11) defeated Dallas Christian 74-48 Monday night, January 16.

With the Ladies up one early in the second half, senior Linda Gomez Gil took a defensive board all the way for a fastbreak hoop while sophomore Jasmine Morris made a pair from the line.

Morris finished the game with a team high 13 points on a 9-for-11 mark from the charity stripe – topping the century mark (103) and taking over the NCAA Division III lead in made free throws­­.

Up 39-35 later in the third quarter, the Ladies used an 8-1 run to take a double-digit lead for good. Sophomore Erin Temple split from the line and junior Peyton Hurst hustled for the layup off freshman’s Sarah Faulhaber’s rebound. Dallas Christian split from the line, but Temple made a fastbreak layup off a dime from a Hurst rebound.

Freshman Deunya Small capped the run with a pair from the charity stripe and a layup. Small led the team with 11 rebounds for the game while Faulhaber added four assists and four points.

Down 8-5 halfway through the first quarter, Centenary used a 17-4 run – allowing no Crusaders’ field goals – to take the double-digit lead after one quarter. Sophomore Savanah Doty tied the game with a triple and Morris hit four from the charity stripe to give the Ladies their first lead of the game.

The free throw parade continued as Dallas Christian hit a pair from the line, Morris went 3-for-4 and senior DeiAnna Hall hit a pair. The Crusaders split from the line to cut the deficit to 17-11, but Doty hit a fastbreak three and Morris added a jumper.

Centenary led 22-12 after a quarter as Morris scored 11 of her 13 points in the frame.

With Centenary up 24-12, Dallas Christian scored 10 unanswered to make it a one-possession game in the second quarter. Shamara Taylor and Victoria Kyukendall hit layups. Kyukendall then hit a pair from the line, and a steal and hoop and a layup by Shamara Taylor cut the lead to one possession. Centenary led 24-22 with 4:48 left in the second quarter.

The Ladies had the ball up four late in the second quarter, but a steal by Ta’kela Taylor and a fastbreak hoop by Christionna Hawkins cut the lead to two at the break.

Despite making 11 field goals to Centenary’s eight in the first half, Dallas Christian trailed and only went 4-for-23 (17.4 percent) from the field as the Ladies pulled away. Kyukendall led all scorers with 19 for the game, while Shamara Taylor added 10. Ta’kela Taylor contributed a game-best 13 rebounds.

Both teams combined for 76 free throws attempted on the night.

Centenary returns to action Friday, January 20, when it hosts Southwestern. Tip-off in a doubleheader with the Gents starts at 5:30 p.m.
