GEORGETOWN, Texas – The Ladies jumped out to an 8-2 lead early, but a big second quarter by the Pirates led to a Centenary (5-14, 1-7 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference) 65-54 loss at Southwestern (8-11, 5-3 SCAC) Friday night, January 27.

Down 2-1 two minutes into the game, sophomore Sheridan Smith hit a three. Freshman Deunya Smith and sophomore Jasmine Morris added two buckets in the paint as Centenary began the game with an 8-2 lead with 6:43 left in the first quarter.

Southwestern countered with a 10-0 run. Madison Edwards started the spurt with a jumper and a free throw. Tori Carraway made a pair of baskets around a Kelsey Faykus jumper to put the home team up four. The Pirates led by as many as six in the quarter, but sophomore Savanah Doty cut the deficit in half with a three with 1:22 left in the quarter as neither team scored the rest of the time.

Threes by Doty and freshman Essa Badon put Centenary back up in the second quarter. Centenary made seven three-pointers compared to only two for the home team in the game. Doty came off the bench for Centenary with 16 points, three triples, six rebounds, and three blocks.

Tied at 28 in the middle of the second quarter, the home team took the lead for good. The Pirates went 3-for-4 from the charity stripe, followed by buckets in the paint from Zhazze Brown and Renee Walker. A Walker split from the line put Southwestern up eight.

The Pirates never led by less than seven the rest of the night.

Southwestern took advantage of a 56-27 edge on the boards, yet only managed a 13-3 advantage in second-chance points. Carraway (19 points, 10 rebounds) and Naomi Brown off the bench (13 points, 12 rebounds) to both tally double-doubles to lead Southwestern.

The Ladies held Southwestern to four points in the fourth quarter, but could not take advantage with only six points themselves. The Pirates only shot 10 percent (1-for-10), but Centenary did not fare much better at 12.5 percent (2-for-16).

Centenary closes out the month of January in Seguin, Texas, against Texas Lutheran tomorrow night at 4 p.m.
