Grinnell paces Ladies to second-place finish

TUNICA, Miss. – Rachel Grinnell turned in a top-five finish to lead four Centenary golfers inside the top five as the Ladies wrapped up a second-place finish at The Buccaneer Tuesday afternoon to close fall play.

Centenary returns to the course Feb. 18 at the McNeese Collegiate Invitational in Broussard, La. at the Le Triomphe Country Club.

The Ladies finished second in the five-team field, 46 strokes behind Shorter College. Shorter placed five inside the top eight, led by individual champion Pauline Schopp (75-73 – 148), who was just 4-over-par. Teammates Mario Bengtsson pulled in second and third, finishing six and 11 strokes back, respectively.

Grinnell fired an opening-round 79, just a shot off her season-best 78 at the ULM Fred Marx Invitational. She followed that with an 81, lowering her season average to 82.1, third-best on the squad.

Jamie Wright closed a sixth-place finish after tying Grinnell for the first-round lead with a 79, but lost 10 strokes in the final round for a 168, eight strokes behind Grinnell. Justine Kemp tallied a ninth-place finish after knocking off two strokes from her first-round 87. Sarah Bradshaw capped the top-10 finishes for the Ladies with an 86-91—177, just a shot ahead of Kylee Goldthorn, who finished 11th in the field of 20.
