Ladies, Gents look to avenge last year's Mayor's Cup losses
SHREVEPORT – Bragging rights are on the line as in-city rivals Centenary and LSU-S prepare to face off in the second annual Mayor’s Cup Monday evening, with all proceeds going to March of Dimes.
The women kick off the doubleheader at LSUS at 3 p.m., followed by the men at 5, both exhibition games for Centenary, which is looking to avenge last year’s losses. The Gents fell 1-0 and the Ladies 3-2 in the inaugural matches at Mayo Field.
The Lady Pilots enter the season 0-1 on the year after a 5-0 loss at Louisiana Tech. The Pilots share the 0-1 mark after dropping its home and season opener 1-0 to UT Dallas Aug. 23.
These matches typically mean year-long bragging rights for the winning side, but not the Mayor’s Cup. That’s a secondary detail compared to the motive behind the in-city rivalry.
“(LSUS men’s) head coach Mike Aguilar and I both have children who were born prematurely,” Gents head coach David Orr said. “After the premature birth of my son Camdem, we starting learning what the March of Dimes effort is, and that’s to stop premature births. It’s also to educate those who have premature births and the steps to go through that.”
Last year, the games attracted 2,018 fans to Mayo Field and raised more the $700 for March of Dimes.
The Mayor’s Cup marks the first contests of the year for Centenary, but will not count toward the official records.
“We’re taking the field for the first time as a team, so the new guys and older guys meshing together is important,” Orr said. “Our preseason is long. We don’t start conference play until late September, so we’re going to use the next three weeks as a preseason tune up. This first game is a matter of seeing where we are and is the first step in the evaluation.”
Despite the game’s label as an exhibition contest, Centenary expects to compete at a high level.
“It’s still the Mayor’s Cup, Orr said. “We’ll get to see firsthand what it looks like when you’re competing with an in-town rival. It’ll be really interesting and I’m looking forward to seeing how our players prepared themselves mentally and physically and where their focus is in approaching the game.”
Centenary officially starts the regular season with a doubleheader at Schreiner Sept. 1 and at Texas Lutheran Sept. 3.
The Gents make their home debut Sept. 8 against Howard Payne, followed by the Ladies the next day, hosting Millsaps College.
