Ladies to host Wiley in first leg of doubleheader
SHREVEPORT – Centenary is set to host its first soccer doubleheader of the year as two young Wiley College programs visit Mayo Field at 5 and 7 p.m.
The Ladies (2-1-1) kick off first at 5, looking to keep the visiting Wildcats winless. Wiley’s women are 0-3, pending Thursday’s contest at LeTourneau. The Gents (1-3) also host a winless Wildcats squad (0-4 before Thursday’s match at LeTourneau).
The Ladies and Gents are coming off games at LeTourneau Tuesday night, where Carly Slovensky netted a career-best three goals in the Ladies 4-2 win before the Gents dropped a 2-1 contest.
Centenary is looking to snap a three-game losing streak, all by one goal.
“We’ve got to do a better job of closing games,” Gents head coach David Orr said. “We have a lot of work to do until we’re the team we need to be, and this is a good opportunity for us to get another win under our belt. Wiley is a good team with some talented players, and by no means can we underestimate then, but playing at home again should be beneficial for us.”
Both Centenary squads are 0-1 at home. Traditionally, the Ladies and Gents have made the most of the home field advantage, posting a combined record 15-5-1 at Mayo Field in 2011.
The Ladies, however, are filled with youth and have only three of 17 players who have played multiple seasons at home. Despite the young team, head coach Glenn Evans was pleased with his team’s performance Tuesday, especially the newcomers.
“We were pleased with our younger players Tuesday. They stepped up,” Evans said. “But we have to do a better job closing games. We kind of lost focus a little bit, but that’s characteristic of a younger team.”
Slovensky, a sophomore defender, leads the Ladies in goals (4) and points (8), accounting for more than half of the team’s goals. Freshmen Amanda Atwell and Madison Alexander have the other three goals with two and one, respectively.
A trio of Gents have scored their three goals on the year as seniors Adam Ghaemmaghami and Spencer Nickerson have one apiece while freshman Zachary Kidder scored the team’s first goal of the year.
