SHREVEPORT, La. – The Ladies faced a deficit only four minutes into the game, but a score in each half gave head coach Greg Cathell his first win in the home and Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference opener of 2017 as Centenary (1-2, 1-0 SCAC) took a 2-1 win against Austin College (1-2, 0-1 SCAC) at Mayo Field Friday night, September 8.

In the 36th minute, junior Liz Knight crossed the ball into the box and found sophomore Betzabet Bravo in front of the goal. Bravo shot at the Austin College goalkeeper, but it went off her hands and sneaked into the goal for Bravo’s first collegiate goal of her career. The teams were tied at one heading into halftime despite a 9-1 edge for Centenary in shots and 3-1 in shots on target.

In the second half, Austin College picked up the pressure and actually outshot the Ladies 9-7 and 4-2 in shots on target, but it was Centenary who managed the game-winner in the 71st minute. Right of the goal, sophomore Kyra Montes centered a pass intended for Bravo. However, it ricocheted off Bravo to freshman Pamela Fonseca at the top of the box. Fonseca found the back of the net for the winning tally.

Austin College responded with a pair of shots on target in the next five minutes of game time, but the Centenary defense allowed no shots in the final 14 minutes to close out the third consecutive home-opening victory.

Freshman Maggie Pitcher (1-2) earner her first collegiate victory in goal with four saves on five shots faced. Austin College’s Maya Erwin (1-2) also grabbed four saves, but faced one more shot than Pitcher.

The visitors got on the board in the fifth minute on its only shot on goal in the first half. At the top of the box, Mackenzie Bolen found Tori Strunk towards the left post. She shot the ball in the right corner of the goal and the ‘Roos 1-0 lead.
