Gents and Ladies Swimming Knocks off Ozarks, Falls to Southwestern

SHREVEPORT, La. – In the final home meet of 2016, the Centenary swimming teams split a pair of Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference dual meets. The Gents knocked off the University of the Ozarks 194-32, but fell to Southwestern 154-87. The Ladies bested the Eagles 156-48, but lost to the Pirates 134-99.

The women’s 400-yard free relay team of junior Caitlyn Faulhaber, freshman Liz Ryan, senior Jane Barney, and sophomore Elena Ring won the event by 3:51.24 – outdistancing the Pirates by nearly four seconds.

"The Ladies had a great meet today," explained assistant coach Kyle Joplin. "Elizabeth Ryan and Elena Ring won both their individual events. Jessica Jordan won an event, and the Ladies 400 free relay won, which is the first time in several years that we've beaten Southwestern's relay teams."

Individual wins for the Ladies include Ring in the 50 butterfly and 50 backstroke. She won the butterfly with a time of 28.04, just out-touching Southwestern’ s Erika Dubros by 0.01. Ring won the backstroke, with freshman Ellen Atkinson finishing third, with times of 30.88 and 31.56, respectively.

The Ladies also swept the top-4 spots in the 50 free, led by Ryan (25.77). Faulhaber finished second (26.20), freshman Tori Boyle third (27.34), and Atkinson fourth (28.63).

Besides a win as a member of the 400-free relay and the 50 free, Ryan won the 100 free, touching the wall in 56.36.

Freshman Jessi Jordan won the 100-yards breaststroke (1:12.40), and finished second in the 50 breaststroke (33.39), and third in the 100 IM (1:07.12).

The Gents 200-medley relay team of juniors Mason Kay and Anthony McDonald and sophomores Paul Ahluwalia and Zach Harrison won the event in 1:42.22. Individually, McDonald won the 200 free with a time of 1:50.52 and took second in the 100 free with a time of 48.66.

"The men swam well today overall, and we're pleased with where we're at for this time of year," said Joplin. 

Senior Juan Tapia turned in a pair of runner-up finishes in the 100 backstroke (57.07) and 100 IM (57.36). McDonald also took second in the 50 (28.87) and the 100 breaststroke (1:01.90).

Centenary finishes out 2016 at the Hendrix Invitational November 19-20. Competition begins 5 p.m. next Friday, with the first event set to begin at 10 a.m. Saturday.
