LONGVIEW, Texas - Competing as individuals, junior Jessica Varner and Taylor Adair carded the first and third best rounds of the day to finish 1-2 for the Ladies, while the Gents Golf team finished eighth with a 928 (+76) total in the final round of the Pinecrest Intercollegiate, hosted by LeTourneau on Tuesday, March 13.
Varner turned in a 78 (+6) in the final round for a two-day total of 152 (+8) to win her fourth tournament of the season. While she led after day one thanks to a -2 total on par-5's, Varner held on to the lead on day two thanks to par-4 scoring. Finishing four over on par-4s yesterday, she finished only one over in today's play. Varner carded the most birdies (six) and the fourth-most pars (17) for the tournament.
Sitting fourth after day one, Adair recorded the third-best round of the day (81, +9) to finish with a total of 158 (+14), besting Mathilde Bertuol of Tyler Junior College by a single stroke. Adair finished third with four birdies in the tournament while placing right behind her teammate in pars with 16.
On the men's side, freshman Austin Craig finished tied for 16th, turning in a final round 81 (+14) for a 227 (+14) three-round total. Sophomore Reed Balcerowicz tallied the best round of the day for the Gents with a 77 (+6). With a three-round total of 229 (+16), Balcerowicz finished tied for 23rd.
Finishing tied for 39th with a 236 (+23), freshman Harrison John fired an 83 (+12) in the final round. Sophomore Edvard Granrud shot a final round of 86 (+15) and turned in a 240 (+27) total to finish 46th. Sophomore Taylor Wells round of 82 (+11) was his best of the tournament as he moved up one spot on the second day to finish 52nd (250, +37).
Tyler Junior College and Bethany College tied for the men's team title with an 875 (+23) total.
The Centenary Gents and Ladies golf teams return to action next Monday and Tuesday, March 19-20, for the annual Hal Sutton Invite at Stonebridge Country Club in Bossier City.
