SHREVEPORT, La. -- Senior Emerson Trager pitched eight scoreless innings to lead Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (3-0) to a 5-0 win over Centenary (0-3) Sunday at Shehee Stadium.
Sweeping the three-game season-opening series against the Gents, Trager dominated the Centenary batters throughout Sunday's game, allowing just four hits and striking out five in eight innings of work. The lefty walked just two batters in his eight innings, not allowing a run for his first win of the season.
After a Brian Gerondale RBI-single in the first, scoring Trae Williams from second, Corpus Christi used a three-run third inning to pull away from the Gents.
In the third with two outs, four-straight hits, started by a single to right by first baseman Jason Graham, allowed the Islanders to score the three runs. The inning was capped off by a two-run RBI single to left by outfielder David Williams.
For the second consecutive day, Centenary struggled getting the final out of an inning, allowing the three runs with two outs on the board.
Although a good performance by Trager, the Gents just couldn't get a hit in Sunday's game, outhit, 17-5, for the contest.
Leading Centenary from the plate in Sunday's game, senior Matt Webb (Blue Springs, Mo.) went 2-for-2, drawing two walks.
Gents starting pitcher Jeremy Sheehan (Bonner Springs, Kan.) went 4 1/3 innings, allowing five runs and 13 hits.
Relievers David McElroy (Victoria, B.C.), Johnny Noland (Aliso Viejo, Calif.) and Peter Stark (Dallas) combined to allow four hits and no runs over the final 4 2/3 innings of the game.
Centenary continues its homestand Friday, hosting Jackson State at Shehee Stadium at 6:30 p.m. as part of three-game series.
