Gents Score Two Late Goals To Record 3-1 Win At ETBU
The Centenary men's soccer team scored a pair of goals late in the second half to break a 1-1 tie on its way to a 3-1 victory over the East Texas Baptist University Tigers in a non-conference match at Cornish Soccer Field.
Marshall, Texas - The Centenary men's soccer team scored a pair of goals late in the second half to break a 1-1 tie on its way to a 3-1 victory over the East Texas Baptist University Tigers in a non-conference match at Cornish Soccer Field.
The Gents (4-2-1) and Tigers (5-3) were meeting for the ninth time and Centenary now leads the all-time series 4-2-3.
Senior F Ron Masti (Houston, Texas), sophomore F Fernando Santos (Bridgeport, Texas), and freshman F Nathan Uduojie (Houston, Texas) each scored goals for the Gents and freshman GK Sebastian Lutin (Fort Worth, Texas) went the distance and recorded five saves. ETBU GK Ryan Lord also played all 90 minutes and recorded four saves.
Masti gave the Gents a 1-0 lead with a goal in the 32nd minute, his third goal of the season, with the assist credited to sophomore MF Jacob Ramsey (Baton Rouge, La.). The assist was the first of Ramsey's career.
ETBU's Regan Trojacek's goal in the 50th minute tied the match at 1-1 as he scored his third goal of the season and was assisted by Matthew Aguilar. Santos then found the net for the Gents in the 72nd minute to break the tie, scoring his first goal of the season which was unassisted. Uduojie then padded the Gents' lead with a score in the 83rd minute, his fourth goal of the season, off an assist from freshman MF Emiliano Mondragon (Dallas, Texas)
ETBU finished with a sizeable advantage in shots (20-9), but seven of Centenary's shots were on goal and they converted three into goals. The Tigers took six corner kicks while the Gents took just one, and centenary was whistled for 12 fouls and the Tigers five. Seven yellow cards were handed out – five to ETBU and two to Centenary.
The Gents will open Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play at home on Friday against the University of the Ozarks Eagles in a match set for 7 p.m. at Atkins Field.
