Bio

Joseph Moses Jr. enters his fourth season as head coach of the Centenary men's and women's track and field and cross country programs after being named to the position in October, 2021.

Moses Jr., a native of Baton Rouge who attended Baker High School, is a 1994 graduate of LSU where he was a member of a pair of national championship teams with the Tigers in 1988 and 1989. Moses Jr. came to Centenary from Simpson University in Redding, Calif. where he served as head cross country and track and field coach and strength and conditioning coach.

The Centenary cross country program had the honor of hosting the 2024 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships on Nov. 2 at South Bossier Park in Bossier City. The Ladies and Gents welcomed the league's 22 cross country teams for the event and with the additions of Concordia University (Texas), McMurry University and University of the Ozarks to the SCAC, 11 men's and 11 women's teams competed at the meet - creating the largest fields on both sides since the 2011 championships.

Freshman Phillip Hughes (Bossier City, La.) was the Gents' top finisher as he placed 87th overall in a time of 30:58.01. Evan Halbert was 104th, finishing with a time of 36:53.99, freshman Clayton Hancock (Buna, Texas) was 107th (38:57.75), and sophomore Herman Pride (Baton Rouge, La.) finished 108th (41:38.00). The Gents did not record a team score and the Ladies did not have anyone compete.

The Gents finished 12th in the 2025 SCAC Track & Field Championships in April in Seguin, Texas. Sophomore Christian Cormier (Lafayette, La.) had a superb sophomore campaign for the Gents as he was one of the top competitors in the conference all season. He was named the SCAC Men's Track Athlete of the Week (April 22) and Co-Track Athlete of the Week on March 18.

Cormier ran a season-best time of 10.69 in the 100 meters in the SCAC Championships, which was tied for the 11th-fastest time ran all season in the event in the conference. Cormier also ran a top-20 time (18th) in the 200 meters (22.0) on March 22 in the Belhaven Invitational.

Freshman Jay Scott (Slidell, La.) finished ninth in the triple jump with a season-best mark of 12.25m at the conference championships and he also finished 25th in the 100-meter dash (11.06). Hughes  ran a time of 52.60 to finish 25th in the 400-meter dash, sophomore Bryan Washington (Wylie, Texas) was right behind him in 26th place (52.68), and Hancock finished 30th in a time of 52.89. Scott led the way for the Gents in the long jump as he finished 19th (6.01m) and Pride was 26th (5.77m).

Freshman Gabrielle Malagarie (Lafayette, La.) highlighted the SCAC Championships for the Ladies and capped her impressive rookie season as she recorded a runner-up finish in the high jump with a mark of 1.52m to earn All-SCAC honors in the event in Seguin, Texas. The rookie earned the Ladies' best finish in program history in the conference championships as she ended her impressive debut season on a high note. Malagarie's runner-up helped the Ladies finish eighth for the weekend with eight total points.

In the women's long jump, sophomore Mackenzie Haley (Orange, Texas) matched her season best (4.62m) and was 17th at the conference meet, freshman Grayson Shugart (McKinney, Texas) placed 22nd with a season-best 4.50m and Malagarie  had a season-high 4.38m and finished 24th. Shugart earned an eighth-place finish in the triple jump (10.24m).

In the 2023-24 season, Moses Jr. guided senior Xavier Venious (Bossier City, La.) to an All-SCAC campaign as Venious posted a runner-up finish in the 400-meter hurdles at the 2024 SCAC Championships in San Antonio, Texas. Venious had a stellar season as he helped lead the Gents to a sixth-place finish as the Maroon and White tallied 16 points. The Ladies tied for seventh at the conference championships.

Moses Jr.'s first season with the Maroon and White was extremely successful. Sophomore Devante' Jack (Jena, La.) splashed onto the national scene as he ran a conference-record time of 1:52.37 in the men's 800-meters at the 2022 SCAC Championships in San Antonio. Jack became the first Centenary student-athlete ever to win an event at the SCAC Championships and bested several athletes from Division I schools and his 1:52.37 at the time was the 15th-fastest time run all season in division III.

Jack missed out in his final attempt competing in the 800-meter run to qualify for the NCAA Division III Outdoor Championships in May but overall had a stellar season as he recorded two individual wins, a runner-up finish, four top-10 finishes, and was named the SCAC Men's Track Athlete of the Week following his win at the conference meet. He was also named the 2022 SCAC Newcomer of the Year. Centenary recorded 11 top-15 individual finishes as well as eight top-five finishes men and women combined during the season.

Moses Jr. was previously at Xavier University in New Orleans from 2004-18 were he enjoyed annual success at the NAIA school including being named Gulf Coast Athletic Conference (GCAC) Coach of the Year 12 times.

Moses Jr. was the head coach at division 1 Charleston Southern University from 2001-03 where he produced 13 all-conference student-athletes. He led Xavier to 23 conference championships and was twice named Louisiana Coach of the Year. He also coached at Independence Community College, a NJCAA institution in Independence Kansas, from 2000-01.

Moses Jr.'s previous experience is impressive too - He coached 23 conference champions during his stint at Xavier, which led to him being named Louisiana Coach of The Year twice along with twelve GCAC Coach of The Year titles throughout his tenure there alone - During his time prior to that coaching footballers within NAIA bracket he produced 13 All-Conference student-athletes when working at Charleston Southern University between 2001-03

He holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Louisiana State University (1994)
