Gents Set For 2022 SCAC Swimming Championships
The Centenary men's and women's swimming teams will compete in the 2022 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships Wednesday through Saturday at the Garland ISD Natatorium.
Garland, Texas – The Centenary men's and women's swimming teams will compete in the 2022 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships Wednesday through Saturday at the Garland ISD Natatorium.
The Ladies and Gents will be joined by Austin College, Colorado College, McMurry University, University of the Ozarks, Southwestern University and Trinity University for the four-day event. Centenary finished fourth on both the men's and women's side at last season's championships held in San Antonio, Texas.
Centenary swept Austin College at home on Jan. 29 in its regular-season finale. The Gents registered a 94-55 win while the Ladies recorded a 121.50-61.50 victory. The meet was originally scheduled for Jan. 22 and was going to serve as Centenary's annual Senior Day but was postponed due to COVID-19 health and safety concerns. Centenary tallied 13 individual wins in the meet, as six Gents claimed wins and the Ladies picked up seven and also claimed wins in both the men's and women's 200 free relay.
The Maroon and White nearly matched its single-meet season high of 14 accomplished in the season-opening meet at home versus McMurry back on Oct. 30. The Ladies and Gents combined to record an impressive 11 individual wins and one team win versus Hendrix on Nov. 13.
Centenary and Austin College were facing each other for the second time in two weeks as the Ladies and Gents combined to record nine individual victories on Jan. 15 in the Austin College Invitational against the host 'Roos and University of the Ozarks in Sherman, Texas.
Wednesday's schedule features the 200 Medley Relay followed by the 800 Free Relay, both set for 5 p.m. Competition begins at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday with the prelims of the 200 free relay followed by the 500 free, 200 IM, and 50 free. The finals of those for events will be held at 6 p.m. Friday's schedule features the same times – 10:30 a.m. for prelims and finals at 6 p.m. Saturday's action begins at 10:30 a.m. and is followed by the finals at 5:45 p.m.
Senior Mitchell Lulich (New Orleans, La.) enters the championships in the midst of a very impressive season as has seven individual victories. Lulich highlighted the meet versus Austin College on Jan. 29 for the Gents with three individual wins and was a member of the winning 200 free relay squad. Lulich won the 50 back, swimming a time of 28.39, claimed a win in the 200 IM (2:13.81), and won the 100-yard breast (1:04.24).
Lulich earned all-conference honors at last season's championships with his runner-up finish in the 100-yard breast, as he swam a time of 58:31 and was part of a Gents' team that placed third in the finals of the 400-yard Medley Relay (3:33.13) to secure additional all-conference honors.
Freshman Cash Coats (Andrews, Texas) won the 50 free (24.12) and finished third in the 100 free (54.74). He also teamed with Lulich, sophomore Aiden Peterkin (Zachary, La.), and senior Tripp Montgomery (New Iberia, La.) in the 200 free relay victory. Montgomery also won the 50 breast, swimming a time of 30.38.
Peterkin won the 50 fly (29.11) and finished in the 50 free (26.04) and fifth in the 100 free (56.51). Montgomery also finished third in the 100 breast (1:09.96) and placed fourth in the 100 free (54.75). Sophomore Jules Reny (Lille, France) earned a pair of runner-up finishes in the 200 free (2:11.15) and 50 fly (29.43) and finished fourth in the 50 free (26.28). Freshmen Nathaniel Batiste Jr. (Vacherie, La.) finished second in the 50 free (25.96) and third in the 50 breast (33.01).
