Whiting, 21, the Cardinals' 18th round selection out of Centenary College (La.) in the 2010 first-year player draft, posted a 1-0 record and a 1.59 ERA in five quality starts with 30 strikeouts in 34 innings pitched at Quad Cities (A) during July. The right-hander did not allow more than three runs or six hits in any of his five starts and held opposing hitters to a .178 batting average.
Whiting moved into his starting pitcher role on June 4th of this season following 16 appearances out of the bullpen. The Oakdale, Calif., native currently ranks 2nd in the Midwest League with a 1.83 ERA which also ranks 3rd in all of Minor League Baseball and leads the league with an 0.82 WHIP (walks+hits/innings pitched) which is also the best among all minor league qualifiers.
"Boone has had a very strong season so far," said Cardinals farm director John Vuch. "He has been outstanding since earning the opportunity to move into the starting rotation. He's incredibly consistent and gives his team a quality outing each time he takes the mound."
