Devillier Named to Team of the Week, Named Honorable Mention by NCBWA

SHREVEPORT, La. - After pitching a no hitter this past weekend, Centenary junior right-hander Matthew Devillier picked up two more honors to go with his accolades from the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference and the Louisiana Sports Writers Association.

Released Wednesday afternoon, April 25, Devillier was named Honorable Mention NCAA Division III Pitcher of the Week by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association. This honor is on the heels of his first appearance on the Team of the Week from Tuesday and both SCAC and All-Louisiana Pitcher of the Week on Monday.

In the second game of a doubleheader Friday night (April 20) against Austin College, a 7-0 Gents win, Devillier (5-3) allowed only two walks and struck out a career high 12 'Roos.

Devillier ended the game in style when he struck out the side in the ninth. He went 3-0 on the final hitter of the game, but two strikes looking and then a swing and a miss ended the contest. He finished the game with 115 pitches, 73 of them for strikes.

Austin College almost had its first hit with a fly ball to center in the fourth, but junior Cameron Guin came charging in to make a diving catch. The leadoff batter in the top of the eighth hit a sharp grounder between first and second, but senior first baseman Cole Lavergne dove for the ball and flipped to Devillier covering first for the out.

Devillier also retired the side in order in an inning of relief against East Texas Baptist Tuesday, April 17.

The no hitter was Centenary's first as a member of NCAA Division III. The last no hitter in program history came on March 2, 1993, in the second game of a double header against Houston Baptist. David Kirsch went all five innings of a run-ruled game, a 10-0 Gent victory.

Centenary returns to action Saturday with a doubleheader against top-ranked Trinity. The Gents and Tigers complete the three-game series with a single game Sunday. Whoever wins the series will be the SCAC Regular Season Champions and the top seed in the Conference Tournament.
