Hey Centenary Gym Fans!
It's your junior Rose Deshler back with this week's gym talk!
Earlier this week we attended our annual sexual assault awareness training with Chief Walker and Detective Butcher. Thank you so much for explaining all the ways we can stay safe on campus as well as in the Shreveport area. Furthermore, thank you for teaching us some of the basic ways we can use self-defense if we are ever in a bad situation. I think we all had a lot of fun getting to throw some punches!
Then on Thursday we had our first "Shelly Time" of the season. Shout out to Shelly for dedicating her time to come in and work with us on our mental strength! We appreciate you coming in and helping us get to know each other as a team.
After a great week the Ladies kicked it in gear for three amazing gym days in a row. The Ladies are putting together their routines and looking strong! Shout out to Lacey Wedge for landing her piked front handspring vault this Saturday!
Lastly, we ended our week with a talk given by Scott Muscutt otherwise known as "Musky." Musky is the general manager of the Shreveport Mud Bugs Hockey team. Beyond hockey, he is a fantastic motivational speaker. He spoke with us about how to really focus in to reach our goals, and how important our choices, our character and our culture are in making that happen. One of the more impactful moments during the conversation was when Musky recited a poem from memory about family. Musky talked about how a team must become "family" to be successful. He gave many examples, and we have all heard it before, but every championship team ever interviewed always talks about their team and what a great group or family they were. The poem was written in 1859 by Dinah Mulock Craik and reads as follows:
"Oh, the comfort, the inexpressible comfort of feeling safe with a person;
having neither to weigh thoughts nor measure words,
but to pour them all out, just as they are, chaff and grain together,
knowing that a faithful hand will take and sift them,
keep what is worth keeping, and then,
with a breath of kindness,
blow the rest away"
Thank you for tuning in! Until next time,
