Brevard, N.C. - The Brevard College men's golf team opened up their 2008 fall season on Sunday, playing co-host to the Glenn Cannon Fall Invitational tournament in Pisgah Forest, N.C.
The Tornados, who fielded two teams, had strong showings from all of its team members, putting both teams in the top-six after one round of play.
BC freshman Bret McGaughey led the Tornados on Sunday afternoon, carding a 71, -1, for the day, which placed him in a tie at first-place individual overall.
Fellow freshman Joshua Davis turned in a 72, even par, edging out returner Grant Carnie who shot a 73, +1 for the first round.
Seniors Chris White and Myles Johnston, who both played on the Brevard "B" team, recorded rounds of 75, +3 for day one, helping guide the "B" squad to a sixth-place showing after one round of play.
The Brevard College "A" team is in first-place overall with 293, -5, for day one. The Tornados are just ahead of Cape Fear CC who carded a combined round one of 296, -8.
Mars Hill College is in third-place overall with a score of 301, -13, while Tri-County CC (304) and Milligan College (307) round out the top-five.
Individually, the Tornados McGaughey is in a three-way tie for first-place with Nathan Blankenship of Montreat College and Chad Skinner of Mars Hill, as all carded low rounds of 71, -1, for the day.
BC's Davis is in fourth-place overall with his 72, even par, while Carnie is tied for fifth-place with Brandon Holloway of Bluefield College and Ryan Case of Tri-City CC with a 73, +1.
Round two of the Glenn Cannon Fall Invitational will start tomorrow, Monday, with the first tee time slated for approximately 9 a.m.
