San Antonio, Texas – Centenary sophomore Devante' Jack (Jena, La.) missed out in his final attempt competing in the 800-meter run to qualify for the NCAA Division III Outdoor Championship in the Saint's Last Chance Meet hosted by Our Lady of the Lake University last Friday.
Jack ran a time of 1:56.18 in the 800, the event that he won last month at the 2022 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships at Trinity University. Jack ran a conference-record time of 1:52.37 and became the first Centenary student-athlete ever to win an event at the SCAC Championships. His attempt to qualify for the upcoming NCAA D3 Championships fell just short interestingly enough in the same city where he previously won and made history.
Jack bested several athletes from Division I schools at the SCAC Championships and his 1:52.37 at the time was the 15th-fastest time run all season in division III. He also won the 800 in a previous season-best time of 1:56.85 on April 15 at the Little Rock Twilight and now has four top-10 finishes and a runner-up finish in the 800 this season in addition to his two wins. Jack was named the SCAC Men's Track Athlete of the Week following his win at the conference meet as his time bested the former conference championship meet mark of 1:53.50 which was set by Trinity's Zach Brush in 2011.
