Swimming Teams Set for 2021 SCAC Championships
The Centenary men’s and women’s swimming teams will compete in the 2021 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships Feb. 11-13 at the Bill Walker Natatorium.
San Antonio, Texas - The Centenary men's and women's swimming teams will compete in the 2021 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships Feb. 11-13 at the Bill Walker Natatorium.
The Maroon and White earned a pair of top-five finishes at the 2020 SCAC Championships as the Ladies placed fourth overall with a final points total of 407 while the Gents finished fifth with 305 points.
Centenary had a successful initial meet this season at the Austin College Double Dual meet last month against the host 'Roos and McMurry University in Sherman, Texas. The Gents defeated Austin College, 134-65 and fell to McMurry, 117-111. On the women's side, the Ladies defeated McMurry, 139.50-76.50 and lost to Austin, 133.000-95.00.
"We are looking forward to seeing all of the hard work and dedication that our student-athletes have shown pay off as we head into the SCAC Championships, said centenary head coach Brad langford. "This season has been very unconventional but we believe it has made our teamm stronger."
The team of Ricky LaFleur (Lafayette, La.), Mitchell Lulich (New Orleans, La.), Aiden Peterkin (Zachary, La.), and (Miguel Vasquez (Lafayette, La.) claimed victory in the finals of the 200-Yard Medley Relay swimming a time of 1:44.44 at the meet in Sherman, Texas. Vasquez won the 100-Yard backstroke, swimming a time of 52.96 as well as the 100-yard Freestyle (47.85). LaFleur won the 100-Yard Breaststroke with a time of 1:05.54 while Lulich placed second with a time of 1:05.89. Freshman Tony Barbee (Plaquemine, La) won the 200-Yard Butterfly, swimming a time of 2:13.79. Vasquez was selected the SCAC Men's Swimmer of the Week on Jan. 25 following his performance at the Austin College Double Dual.
LaFleur also claimed victory in the 200 Yard Breaststroke (2:23.91) while Lulich finished second with a time of 2:24.36. Lulich won the 500-yard Freestyle in a time of 5:24.21. Vasquez hit the trifecta as he claimed a third individual victory, winning the 100-Yard Butterfly as he swam a time of 51.64.
Senior Sarah Harrison (Alexandria, La.) claimed victory in the finals of the 1650-Yard Freestyle, swimming a time of 19:36.01. Harrison also claimed a runner-up finish in the 100-yard Breaststroke, as she swam the finals in a time of 1:17.16. She also placed second in the finals of the 200 Yard Breaststroke with a time of 2:47.03. Freshman Anacelia Galeano Balam (Baton Rouge, La.) won the 100 Yard Butterfly, swimming a time of 1:06.65.
Senior Chris Reese (Alexandria, La.) had a productive day as he placed second in the finals of the 1650-Freestyle and third in the 50-free. Peterkin also placed second in the 200-Yard Freestyle. Junior Lindsay Strohm (McKinney, Texas) finished second in the 200-free and third in the 500-free while freshman Bryn Jenkins (Houston, Texas) picked up a pair of runner-up finishes in the 100-yard Backstroke as well as the 200-back.
Several swimmers had outstanding individual finishes at last season's SCAC Championships. Kaylin Swoboda (New Orleans) placed third in the finals of the Women's 200 Yard IM with a time of 2:10.35. Brianna Serret (Alexandria, La.) nearly claimed the Women's 100 Yard Butterfly title as she finished second in the finals with a time of 57.08. Serret finished fourth in the finals of the 200 Yard Butterfly, swimming a time of 2:14.75.
Swoboda picked up a runner-up finish in the Women's 100 Yard Breaststroke final, swimming a time of 1:06.31 She then placed second in the finals of the 200 Yard Breaststroke as she swam a time of 2:27.18. Serret also had a third-place finish in the finals of the Women's 100 Yard Backstroke. She swam a time of 59.16
Ricky LaFleur (Lafayette, La.) had a very successful weekend for the Gents as he finished fifth in the finals of the Men's 200 Yard IM, swimming a time of 1:55.77 and also finished sixth in the finals of the Men's 100 Yard Breaststroke. He also placed fourth in the finals of the 200 Yard Breaststroke with a time of 2:07.51.
Centenary's team of Madelyn Frederick (Slidell, La.), Sarah Harrison (Alexandria, La.), Serret, and Swoboda placed fourth in the finals of the Women's 400 Yard Medley Relay, swimming a time of 4:04.74. The same Ladies' foursome that swam the 400 Yard Medley Relay teamed to finish fourth in the 400 Yard Freestyle Relay, swimming a time of 3:46.18.
