San Antonio, Texas – The Centenary women's swimming team, thanks in part to a historic individual performance by junior Brianna Serret, heads into the final day of the 2021 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships in third place overall at the Bill Walker Natatorium.
The Ladies are in position for their best finish in the conference championships since becoming a SCAC member in 2013. Centenary placed third that season with 586 points, and has finished fourth or fifth in the seven season since. The Maroon and White currently hold 337 points and are behind leader Trinity and second-place Southwestern and nine points ahead of fourth-place Colorado College.
Serret (Alexandria, La.) won the 100-Yard Backstroke with a time of 59.29, marking the program's first individual win in the event and just the third individual win by a Centenary Ladies swimmer at the SCAC Championships since the Maroon and White joined the conference prior to the 2012-13 season. She edged Trinity's Caroline North by seven seconds to claim the victory and secure all-conference honors for the second-straight season. The previous two individual wins by the Ladies were Haley Schneider in 2013 in the 100 butterfly, 57.04, and Rachel Olson in the 200 butterfly in 2014 with a time of 2:06.34.
She earned all-conference honors last season with a runner-up finish and two more top-five finishes at this event. She nearly claimed the Women's 100 Yard Butterfly title as she finished second in the finals with a time of 57.08, finished fourth in the finals of the 200 Yard Butterfly, swimming a time of 2:14.75 and also had a third-place finish in the finals of the Women's 100 Yard Backstroke as she swam a time of 59.16.
"We have never been in this position before, with a chance to potentially finish third after a great day today," said Centenary head coach Brad Langford. "All of our girls are coming together and swimming fast right now and it is awesome to see."
"It is exciting to have put in the work and see if we can do it. I am proud of all of them and ready for Saturday," said Langford.
