SHREVEPORT, La. - The Gents were able to tie the game with a run in the top of the third, but Centenary (7-3) left six men stranded and managed a season-low five hits in a 4-1 loss at UT Tyler (5-1) Sunday afternoon, February 19.
With one out in the third and Centenary down 1-0, freshman Zane Wilkinson walked and advanced to second on a groundout. A two-out double by freshman Cody Crowder scored Wilkinson for the lone Gents run.
Still tied at one top of the fifth with two outs, Wilkinson walked and senior Aaron Quintanilla singled. However, a groundout ended the threat.
Still tied at one, UT Tyler scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth off of junior Centenary. With one out, Tim Hunter and Gunnar Quick singled. Kirk induced a flyout for the second out, but Daniel Williams singled in a run and Quick advanced to third. A balk scored the second run to put the Patriots up 3-1.
UT Tyler added an insurance run in the eighth for the final three-run deficit.
Kirk (1-1) took the loss for Centenary, allowing three runs and 13 hits in 6.2 innings of work. Ryan Cheatham (2-0) took the win for UT Tyler, scattering five hits and three walks with one earned run allowed in seven innings.
Reese Read threw a scoreless ninth for his second save of the season for the home team.
Centenary opens up home play Thursday, February 23, when it hosts Rust for a doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
