Ladies Lose At St. Thomas On Sunday
The Centenary women's basketball team lost 93-49 to the University of St. Thomas Celts on Sunday afternoon in a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference contest at the Jerabeck Center.
Houston– The Centenary women's basketball team lost 93-49 to the University of St. Thomas Celts on Sunday afternoon in a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference contest at the Jerabeck Center.
The Ladies (2-14, 1-7 SCAC) have lost five games in a row after dropping a 109-37 decision at Colorado College on Friday night. The Celts (6-9, 4-4 SCAC) won their third game in a row and improved to 4-3 at home this season.
Centenary shot 40.4 % (19-47) from the floor for the game and went 11-14 at the free-throw line for 78.6 %, but did not make a 3-point basket in four attempts. The Ladies finished with seven steals, six assists, and two blocked shots. St. Thomas shot 53.3 % (32-60) from the floor, 11-20 (55.0 %) from beyond the arc, and 18-22 at the FT line for 81.8 %. The Celts tallied 22 assists, 20 steals, and five blocked shots.
The Ladies outrebounded the Celts 29-24 but turned the ball over 32 times, which led to 51 St. Thomas points. The Celts gave it away 16 times which the Ladies converted into 10 points. St. Thomas won a close battle inside, finishing with 40 points in the paint to Centenary's 34, the Celts finished with a 21-9 advantage in fast break points and 42-12 in bench points. Centenary finished with 11 second-chance points and UST had five.
The Celts outscored the Ladies 27-11 in the first quarter and 15-9 in a low-scoring second period to lead 42-20 at halftime. UST then outscored Centenary 51-29 after halftime to seal the win.
Freshman F Shyanne Phillips (Leesville, La.) led the Ladies with 19 points and was the only Centenary player to reach double figures as she did so for the seventh time this season. She grabbed a game-high nine rebounds as she just missed a double-double and added two assists and a steal. Phillips was 7-12 from the floor and 5-6 at the FT line in 36 minutes.
Five Celts reached double figures, led by 13 apiece from Amber Bourgeois and Amyia Bowie. Laura Jones and Ravyn Ellis each scored 12 and Audrey Hernandez finished with 10.
The Ladies remain on the road next weekend as they travel to Kerrville, Texas on Jan. 31 to face Schreiner University and to San Antonio on Feb. 1 to face Trinity University.
