Ladies Fall At Hendrix In Season Opener
The Centenary women's basketball team fell 69-48 to the Hendrix College Warriors in its season opener and a non-conference contest on Sunday afternoon inside Grove Gymnasium.
Conway, Ark. - The Centenary women's basketball team fell 69-48 to the Hendrix College Warriors in its season opener and a non-conference contest on Sunday afternoon inside Grove Gymnasium.
The Ladies (0-1) only trailed the Warriors (1-0) by a score of 30-25 at halftime but were outscored 39-23 in the second half. The Ladies and Warriors will meet again this season with the second meeting set for Tuesday, Nov. 26 in Shreveport.
Centenary finished 15-69 from the floor (21.7 %) while Hendrix shot 35.2 % (19-54). The Ladies finished just 3-12 (25.0 %) from beyond the arc while the Warriors went 7-19 (36.8 %). Hendrix finished 24-36 (66.7 %) from the free-throw line and Centenary was 15-28 (53.6 %). The Warriors won the rebounding battle, 54-39, with a 39-22 edge in defensive rebounds and grabbed 15 on the offensive end while the Ladies had 17.
The Warriors were ahead 17-14 after the first quarter and edged the Ladies 13-11 in the second period. Hendrix outscored Centenary 23-12 in the third quarter and 16-11 in the final quarter. Centenary turned the ball over 13 times and Hendrix gave it away 18 times. The Ladies finished with 12 steals, three assists, and one blocked shot while the Warriors recorded 11 assists, five steals, and had six blocked shots.
Centenary edged Hendrix in points in the paint, 18-16, and scored 17 points off of the Warriors' 18 turnovers. The Ladies turned the ball over 13 times which led to 15 points for the Warriors. Hendrix finished with a 20-11 advantage in second-chance points, 11-5 in fast break points, and its bench outscored Centenary's 30-13.
Centenary had three players reach double figures as – junior G Amiyah Barrow (Baton Rouge, La.), freshman G Nevaeh Rivera (Rosepine, La.), and freshman G Kaysharia Woods (Zachary, La.) each scored 10 points to lead the Ladies. Freshman F Shyanne Phillips (Leesville, La.) added eight and junior F Layla Powell (Fort Worth, Texas) had seven.
Freshman G Alexis Duhon (Westlake, La.), freshman G Shakira Miller (Spearsville, La.), and freshman F Anaya Yunusah (New Orleans, La.) each chipped in one point. Junior F Kyra Stokes (Shreveport, La.) was held scoreless in 14 minutes but grabbed four rebounds and had a steal.
Barrow reached double figures for the sixth time in her last eight games dating back to last season and added six rebounds and an assist in 37 minutes on 4-15 shooting. She was 1-2 at the FT line and just 1-7 from 3-point range. Rivera had a solid collegiate debut as she played 16 minutes and was 4-8 from the floor and 2-2 from beyond the arc with two steals, a blocked shot, and a rebound.
Woods played 27 minutes off the bench and was 3-10 from the floor and 4-6 from the FT line with three rebounds, two steals, and one assist. Phillips started and played 33 minutes and finished 3-14 from the floor and 2-4 from the FT line with a game-high 17 rebounds and added four steals as she finished just two points shy of a double-double. Powell played 29 minutes and was 5-7 at the FT line with three boards, and assist, and a steal.
The Warriors had four players reach double figures, led by a game-high 17 points from Bella Cates. Ava Knoedl had 16, Brailey Forst finished with 14, and Natalie Edmonson scored 10. Brooklyn Rowe added six off the bench and Megan Gray and Simone Shields combined for six. Shelby Heil started and was held scoreless but she grabbed seven boards and added a pair of steals and a blocked shot in 19 minutes. Forst recorded a double-double with 11 rebounds, two blocked shots, and two steals.
The Ladies return to action on Thursday with a non-conference game against LeTourneau University in Longview, Texas at 6 p.m.
