Pineville, LA - Centenary men's basketball remained undefeated after defeating Louisiana College 78-74 on the road Saturday Afternoon. Centenary (3-0) extends its winning streak to three games after holding off a late Wildcats run.
Jonathan Blount continued his impressive season by leading all scorers with a season high 31 points, going 10-17 from the field and 3-4 from behind the arc. Blount, named SCAC's Player of the Week last week, is averaging 27.0 ppg and has notched a game high in all three of Centenary's games so far.
Brett Bell got his second consecutive double-double of the year scoring 11 points and pulling down 14 rebounds. Donovan Williams and Caden Cheramie added 10 points and 8 points respectively. Centenary led in rebounding 45-38.
Centenary came out in the first half strong, jumping out to a 10-2 lead the first 3 minutes of the ballgame. Louisiana College (0-2) would respond and got within four points before Centenary went on a 9-4 run midway through the first half to maintain control of the game. Centenary's largest lead of the night was 11 points, which came at halftime 45-34.
Teams consistently traded baskets in the second half, with neither team able to gain much momentum to come back or put the other away. The Gents were up by 9 with 2:38 remaining, but Louisiana College went on a 7-4 run to narrow the gap 74-70 with 1:09 left. Bell's free throw with 0:04 seconds put the Gents up 78-74 and sealed the game with that final score.
Doc Welch led the Wildcats in scoring with 22 points. Danny Sumner also scored in double-figures, contributing 16 on the game.
Centenary continues its road trip next Tuesday against McNeese State at 7:30pm.
