Bethany, Okla. - The Centenary College STUNT team was tested over the weekend in the Southern Nazarene University Tournament as the Ladies played a quartet of tough matches inside the Sawyer Center.
In four difficult matches this past weekend, the Ladies fought hard to improve their performances and accomplish several goals that aren't reflected on the score board which I will consider "non-scoreboard wins," said Centenary head coach Kaylee King.
"Heading into game one, we knew that scoring a point against Hope International, an NAIA national champion contender was likely not in the cards for us. However, our goal was to play our best. While we had quite a few issues, it was a great learning experience for us to take into the next three games."
On day two, the Ladies took on host SNU to start the day of competition. Again, a 12-0 score in favor of the Bolts did not accurately reflect the progress made by the team including no modifications or omissions in several rounds of play.
"SNU was an awesome competitor. They are closer to our skill level and just barely edged past us for the point in some areas. For a second-year program, they are sharp on the routines that they play, and while we played much better than the night before, we just couldn't pull ahead."
In the second game of the night, Centenary faced a familiar face in Connors State College, a JUCO that the Ladies faced two weeks ago. While the Cowboys still pulled off the win, the Ladies played to a score of 9-1 and earned an outright win for their point earned as opposed to tying for it like in the previous game.
"The Ladies were right there. They played better but just couldn't finish the fight in some routines. Connors was just cleaner. However, being able to play strategically and keep them to a score of only 9 instead of the available 12 was a success along with outright earning the one point we did receive. It was a major improvement."
Finally, the Ladies took on the 2024 DII STUNT National Champions from Oklahoma Baptist Saturday morning. With a roster over double the size of Centenary, it wasn't shocking they were able to clinch the 12-0 win.
"This was our best performance yet. Again, the scoreboard makes it hard to understand the little nuances that got better throughout the entire tournament. The difference in this team from day one to day three was exceptional and I couldn't be prouder of the work they put in."
For the weekend, four Ladies went on to earn 70 rounds of play – sophomore Kaitlynne Anderson (Carlisle, Pa.), senior Avery Cauley (Little Rock, Ark.), freshman Trinity Bustamento (Blanchard, La.), and sophomore Ezmeriah Gonzalez (Longview, Texas).
Sophomore Harleigh Doherty (Cincinnati, Ohio), sophomore Dalila Ramirez (Austin, Texas), junior Jo Hoffman (Ragley, La.), freshman Bryanna Hutcherson (Normangee, Texas), sophomore Leah Dawson (Shreveport, La.), sophomore Alli Ledoux (Port Barre, La.), and sophomore Briara Thompson (Bossier City, La.) all hit 60 rounds of play and sophomore J'Anna Sweat (Pitkin, La.) hit 50 rounds of play.
Centenary's challenging schedule includes a mix of junior colleges, NAIA, and teams from all three NCAA divisions. The Ladies' season is set to conclude on March 16.
