Volleyball Set To Face Grambling On Tuesday
The Centenary volleyball team looks to extend its season-best three game winning streak on Tuesday as the Ladies welcome the Grambling State University Lady Tigers to town for a non-conference match set for 6 p.m. at the Gold Dome.
Shreveport – The Centenary volleyball team looks to extend its season-best three game winning streak on Tuesday as the Ladies welcome the Grambling State University Lady Tigers to town for a non-conference match set for 6 p.m. at the Gold Dome.
The Ladies (6-6) recorded a 3-0 sweep over the Jarvis Christian College Bulldogs in a non-conference match last Wednesday at home in their most recent action. Grambling (3-6) went 1-2 this past weekend in the Stephen F. Austin Tournament in Nacogdoches, Texas. The teams are meeting for the second time this season after the Ladies fell, 3-1, to the Lady Tigers on the road back on Sept. 7. Centenary is off to its best start in the division III era (2011-present) as the Maroon and White have matched the 6-6 starts by the 2011 and 2017 teams. Centenary completed an impressive doubleheader sweep over the Williams Baptist University Eagles on Sept. 11 in its home opener, winning both matches by a 3-0 score.
Centenary won set one by a score of 25-18 against Jarvis Christian, took set two 25-13, and finished off the Bulldogs in the third set, 25-12. The Ladies are now 2-0 against the Bulldogs this season after they recorded a 3-2 win in their season opener on Sept. 3 in Batesville, Ark. as part of the Lyon College Highlander Invitational.
The Ladies registered 48 kills in Wednesday's match along with 44 digs. Centenary also tallied 13 service aces, two shy of their season high set in the season opener. Centenary finished set two with a .429 attack % and posted a .414 % in the third and final set. The Ladies posted a .286 % in set one whole holding the Bulldogs to under .200 in all three sets (.188.111.105). The Ladies posted at least 15 kills in all three sets.
Senior OH Alyssa Davis (Leonard, Texas) continued her impressive season as she tallied a game-high 17 kills and added 11 digs along with three aces. She ranks third in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference in kills with 113 and has 102 digs, both of which lead the team. She posted an impressive .538 hitting percentage against Jarvis Christian and leads the team with a mark of .253 for the season. She has now recorded double digits in kills seven times and in digs six times.
Senior S Marichael Clarin-Jante (Houston, Texas) recorded 25 assists, 12 digs, and had three aces with no errors. She is ranked fourth in the SCAC in assists with 178. Junior MB Liz Lowe (San Antonio, Texas) added eight kills, three aces, and a dig and freshman RS Jaylin St. Martin (New Orleans, La.) finished with six digs, three kills, and an ace. Sophomore DS/L Tori Ligman (Bossier City, La.) tallied eight digs, an assist, and an ace.
The Ladies will play home matches on consecutive nights as they face Louisiana College on Wednesday, Sept. 22 at 6 p.m. Centenary will then hit the road to play three matches this weekend in Texas. The Ladies will face Dallas Christian on Friday, Sept. 24 (6 p.m.) and then Dallas and Austin College on Saturday, Sept. 25 in Irving, Texas in matches set for Noon and 3 p.m.
