April has been a very special month for Centenary Athletics from individual achievements, outstanding team results, and significant coaching news so let's recap all of it here:
On Saturday, April 3 the baseball team defeated Dallas 8-4 at home to complete a series sweep and give head coach Mike Diaz his 100th win in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play. Diaz is now a remarkable 103-40 in SCAC contests in his career. Congrats to the skipper!
On Sunday, April 11 history was made in Cape Girardeau, Mo. by sophomore gymnast Taylor Ann Wilson (Memphis, Tenn.). Wilson claimed the individual bars title at the 2021 USA Gymnastics Women's Collegiate National Championship as she became the first Centenary gymnast to win an individual title at the USAG National Championships in the division III era (2012-present). Back to baseball, the Gents completed ANOTHER SWEEP last weekend, their seventh of the season, as they took care of the St. Thomas Celts in SCAC play and are now an impressive 27-5 overall and 12-3 in conference play and in the running for a regular-season title. Shim Eliya of Gents soccer was featured earlier this month as the SCAC Character and Community Male Student Athlete of the Week for the week beginning April 5.
The SCAC Character & Community award honors the efforts of student-athletes who excel in the field of athletics, and also serve their campus and community. Congrats to Shim! The busy month continues this weekend as several teams are in action and is highlighted by Centenary hosting the SCAC Men's Soccer Championship Friday through Sunday at Mayo Field. The Gents earned the No. 6 seed and will face No. 3 seed Colorado College on Friday at 3 p.m. in a quarterfinal match. Centenary will me making its debut in the event as the Gents have qualified for the SCAC Championship for the first time since joining the conference prior to the 2013 season.
The men's soccer, women's soccer, softball and volleyball teams all celebrated Senior Day earlier this month and baseball will honor its senior class next weekend in the final home series of the season.
The men's and women's track and field teams will be in Seguin, Texas for the annual SCAC Championship, the Ladies and Gents golf teams are finishing up play in the SCAC Championships today in Blanco, Texas, and the #19 baseball team faces Louisiana College in Pineville on Wednesday evening before heading to Trinity this weekend for a key conference series.
The Ladies softball team will wrap up its regular season at Schreiner this weekend and lacrosse closes its season at Dallas on Saturday.
