SHREVEPORT�-Centenary men's basketball coach Greg Gary has announced the signings of Gary "G" Redus II and Roman "Ro" Tubner to National Letters of Intent. The two guards join signee Daman Starring and eight returners to bring the roster count to 11 with more players expected to sign soon.
Redus, a 6-foot-6 guard from Decatur, Ala., and Tubner, a 6-foot guard from Montgomery, Ala., both will join the Gents squad from Marion Military Institute in Marion, Ala. The duo helped lead Coach Marcus Thomas' team to a 21-12 record a year after Marion was 8-22. The 21-win season was the first in the 166-year history of the school.
As a freshman, Redus averaged 10.4 points per game to go with 2.2 assists and .567 blocks. He ranked 12th in the National Junior College Athletic Association in free throw percentage (75%), 28th in field goal percentage (49.8%), 31st in blocks per game, and 35th in assists per game.
"G is an all-around excellent defender with a high basketball IQ," said Gary. "He is a multi-dimensional player that can create mismatches for other teams."
Redus, son of the former Major League Baseball player of the same name, drew high praise from his coach at Marion as well.
"I can't say enough about Gary's willingness to adapt and his ability to jump out of the gym," said Thomas. "He's deceptively fast and can knock it down. He can also guard the one through four positions and do it very well."
Also as a freshman, Tubner scored 3.5 points and dished out 1.9 assists per game, which ranked him 43rd in the JUCO ranks. He embraced his role on the court as a floor leader and defender.
"Roman is an exceptional defender who can change the pace of a game with his speed and ability to get to the basket," said Gary. "He is a great kid and is really excited to be here at Centenary."
Thomas also had nothing but good things to say about his former point guard.
"Ro was a special player for us. He came to the program as a scoring point guard and is leaving as a master defender," said Thomas. "With Roman, you get a guy that is all about winning and believes in putting in the work to accomplish the team's mission. He is a floor general on the rise."
Both Redus and Tubner will enter Centenary as sophomores with three years of eligibility remaining.
