ATLANTA, Ga.�-The Centenary men's basketball team has a quick turnaround, playing two games in three days. The Gents were defeated by North Texas on Thursday on the road and spent Friday traveling to Atlanta for a Saturday afternoon game at Georgia Tech. The Gents and Yellow Jackets tip off at 2 p.m. locally, 1 p.m. central.
Centenary (7-5) was out of sorts Thursday night at North Texas after having a week off to take final exams. The Gents got off to a slow start and never recovered, as evidenced by the production of their trio of leading scorers. Tyrone Hamilton, Nick Stallings, and Lance Hill entered the contest averaging a combined 48 points per game, but managed just 22 points in the 76-54 loss.
As a team, the Gents look to improve upon their 37.9% shooting effort when they face Georgia Tech (4-5) from the Atlantic Coast Conference this weekend.
The Yellow Jackets have a key win on their resume over Notre Dame and have lost several close games to top-ranked opponents such as Winthrop, Indiana, and Kansas. Georgia Tech almost took down the Jayhawks in their last game, losing 71-66 in Atlanta.
On paper, Centenary and Georgia Tech are very similar. Both teams are shooting at 47% from the floor, but the Gents hold an advantage from behind the three-point arc (41% to 38%) and at the free throw line (74% to 69%). The Yellow Jackets are averaging 77 points per game compared to 76 for Centenary.
Georgia Tech leads the all-time series with the Gents at 2-0. Centenary played well but lost the series opener in 2005 at the CenturyTel Center in Bossier City, La., 85-69. The Yellow Jackets then handed the Gents a 92-52 loss in Atlanta last season.
