SHREVEPORT, La. - The Gents (4-5) and Ladies (2-6) will welcome very special guests to the Gold Dome for their doubleheader against Rust beginning at 1 p.m. on Monday, December 19. Besides being Faculty and Staff Appreciation Day, the Centenary athletic department will recognize Dr. David Hoaas, longtime Faculty Athletic Representative.
When the Ladies take on Rust (0-10) at 1 p.m., Dr. Dominic Salinas will also serve as a Guest Coach. For the Gents game against the Bearcats (1-11), Dr. Scott Vetter will be on the sidelines as a Guest Coach.
Dr. David Hoaas
Dr. David J. Hoaas begins the 31st year at Centenary during the 2016-2017 academic year and his 17th as the Faculty Athletic Representative (FAR). In his role as the FAR, he serves as a resource to student-athletes, coaches, and administrators in the integration of athletics and academics at Centenary.
"Dr. David Hoaas has served with great distinction in his time at Centenary and working with the athletic department," said Dr. Bob Bunnell, Centenary Director of Athletics and Wellness. "He has been tireless in his efforts to keep clear the communication and relationship between academics and athletics at Centenary College. His extraordinary tenure as FAR is greatly appreciated.
In addition to serving as professor of economics, he served as the College's Associate Provost. Dr. Hoaas offers classes in all areas of applied microeconomics including public sector economics. His economic research has appeared in Tourism Economics, the Atlantic Economic Journal, the Eastern Economic Journal, the Southwestern Journal of Economics, the Social Science Journal, the Southwestern Economic Review, the American Journal of Economics and Sociology, and the Journal of Economic Issues, and the Journal of Wine Economics. For the past fifteen years, he has also served as a peer reviewer for the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges.
"We have been blessed by Hurricane Hoaas' servant's heart as our FAR," explained Gents Head Coach Adam Walsh. "He has played an integral role in the day to day functions of our athletic department over my time here at Centenary. He has always given of his time and energy to serve our student-athletes and our coaches."
Dr. Hoaas is often called on by the local news media to comment upon matters of economic interest to the Shreveport/Bossier community.
Dr. Hoaas is a strong believer in the NCAA Division III philosophy that puts the highest priority on the overall quality of the educational experience and on the successful completion of all students' academic programs. He asks a lot of his students in the classroom and in return, he is proud to show his support for their extra-curricular activities.
Dr. Dominic Salinas
Born in England at Birtingwood Air Force Base, Dr. Dominic Salinas grew up on bases in Europe, California, Texas and Michigan. His family came to Bossier City to the Barksdale Air Force Base when he was ten years old, and he has been a fixture in the Shreveport and Bossier communities ever since.
After working more than 30 years in the public school systems of Caddo and Bossier Parishes, Dr. Salinas began teaching at Centenary in 2010 and is currently the Director of the Education Department at Centenary.
"Dr. Salinas is a great representation of our faculty because he is always positive and very uplifting. Every time you see him, he has a smile on his face," said Ladies sophomore guard Savanah Doty.
Dr. Salinas graduated from LSU-Shreveport in 1977, received his Master's Degree from Louisiana Tech in 1982, and received his Doctorate Degree from Vanderbilt in 1998. In his career, he has taught biology, was an Assistant Principal, and served both as a Supervisor and Director in Caddo and Bossier Parishes.
"I am very excited to have Dr. Dominic Salinas join us on the bench as our faculty Guest Coach," explained Ladies head coach David Foley. "The people make the place, and I am proud to be a part of the Centenary community where our faculty and staff are so supportive of all of our students. I am still new to the College, and have felt very welcomed by the faculty and staff I've met so far.
Added Coach Foley, "I look forward to continue to get to know our community and see some new faces in the gym Monday afternoon! Go Ladies!"
Dr. Scott Vetter
Dr. Scott Vetter begins is in his 28th year at Centenary College. Dr. Vetter holds the Woolf Chair of Geology and the Broyles Chair of Science Education at the College. He is a strong supporter of the Gents and Ladies since coming to Centenary, with numerous student-athletes enrolling in his classes and/or becoming a geology major.
His research includes the origin and evolution of basaltic lavas from the Yellowstone area. Past research includes studies on numerous Apollo lunar samples. For the past 26 years he has worked with more than a 1000 local K-12 science teachers to help better service their students.
"Dr. Vetter also have a servant's heart for not only our students, but also for our local educational community," said Coach Walsh. "His tireless efforts are seen by many, including many of our players who asked that he be chosen as our first faculty guest coach in years. He has been a faithful supporter of the Gents in my time as the head coach here, and it is an honor to have him on the bench with us."
Dr. Vetter graduated with a Bachelor's Degree from Millersville University in 1981, a Master's Degree from North Carolina State in 1984, and a Doctorate Degree from South Carolina in 1989.

The Gents and Ladies dive right in to Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play as the teams travel to Sherman, Texas, to take on Austin College on Dec. 30. Tip for the doubleheader is scheduled for 4 p.m.
