Spilling Some Ink
Centenary Gents and Ladies basketball recently received some attention from d3hoops.com in its weekly "Around the South Region" column by Brian Lester.
Get That Out of Here
The last two seasons, it has not been uncommon for Ladies basketball to be among the nation's leaders in blocked shots. Last season, the Maroon and White were 29th as a team with 5.2 blocks per game, which ranked 29th in NCAA Division III. Brianna Edwards ranked 15th with 82 total blocks.
While Centenary as a team is not as high on the list in 2016-17 (55th with 4.5 blocks per game), two Ladies rank in the top-150 in the nation in total blocks. Freshman Deunya Small sits 128th with 16 total blocks. Sophomore Savanah Doty ranks 149th with 15 total blocks. However, that is an unusual for two reasons: 1. She is a guard and 2: She has only played in seven games.
Doty ranks 15th among guards in total blocks, but third among guards in blocks per game (2.14). In fact, NO player in the nation has more blocks in as many or less games.
On top of that, Doty did not even have a block in the first two games she played in for the season. With 15 blocks the last five games, she is averaging three blocks per game in that stretch.
Heating Up
After a slow start to the season (2-5), the Gents are 4-1 in their last five games. However, that one loss was at Austin College to begin Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference slate.
When the Maroon and White won the SCAC in 2014-15, it went 1-2 in the first three SCAC games before going 10-1 in the final 11 conference contests.
Next Up
Centenary kicks off home conference action next Friday, January 13, when the Gents and Ladies host Colorado College for a doubleheader beginning at 5:30 p.m. Dallas comes to the Gold Dome the following day for a doubleheader beginning at 4 p.m.
