SHREVEPORT, La. - It's 11 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference games down and no more road contests as the Centenary Gents (10-12, 4-7 SCAC) and Ladies (6-16, 2-9 SCAC) host Schreiner and Trinity for key conference matchups this weekend. The teams take on the Mountaineers in a doubleheader Friday night, February 10, with the Ladies tipping off at 5:30 p.m. The doubleheader Saturday, February 11, kicks off at 4 p.m.
Quick Look at SCAC Tournament
The Gents come into the weekend looking to lock down a spot in the SCAC Tournament for the fifth-straight season. With a win this weekend AND an Austin College loss, the Gents will lock up a seed. Meanwhile, Schreiner enters the game in the Gold Dome in first place by a half game (one in the loss column over Texas Lutheran and Colorado College). Texas Lutheran and Colorado College sit tied for second at 8-3 (The Tigers and Bulldogs play this weekend, but Colorado College would be the second seed as of now for a win against Texas Lutheran earlier this season).
Southwestern (6-5) would be the fourth seed, Trinity (5-5) the fifth, and Centenary the sixth. Both Dallas and Austin College would be out and are 2-9.
In an interesting schedule twist, Trinity plays Schreiner twice in the final week of the season. Trinity could still win the SCAC Regular Season Championship.
Centenary can be as high as the third seed to not even making the tournament.
On the Ladies side, Trinity leads at 9-1, followed by Texas Lutheran at 9-2. Austin College (8-3) would be the third seed, Schreiner (7-3) the fourth, and Southwestern (6-5) the fifth. Centenary and Dallas (2-9) and Colorado College (1-10) are fighting for the last spot. Centenary must finish with more SCAC wins than Dallas as the Crusaders swept the Ladies.
Comebacks Fall Short
Both the Gents and Ladies came back from double-digit deficits last month in Kerrville, but fell short in the final seconds. The Gents trailed Schreiner by as much as 12 in the game and 10 with 2:45 left in regulation, but an 11-0 run put Centenary up 89-88 with 27 seconds left. However, two Schreiner free throws gave the Mountaineers a 90-89 win.
For the Ladies, they trailed by as much as seven in the fourth quarter before taking the lead with 48 seconds left, 63-62. Schreiner responded by scoring the final six points in the 68-63 loss.
The Ladies lost to nationally-ranked Trinity in San Antonio, but the Gents overcame a five-point halftime deficit for a 79-71 win.
Next Up
