The Gents (0-1) lost 56-14 to the Millsaps College Majors last Saturday in a non-conference contest at Harper Davis Field in Jackson, Miss. Centenary fell behind 28-7 at halftime and the Majors outscored them by that same difference in the second half to secure the win. The Tigers (2-0) recorded a 28-0 win over Oklahoma Panhandle State at home last Saturday after 47-8 season-opening win over Lyon College at home on Sept. 6.
The Gents and Tigers met last season in Marshall, Texas as ETBU recorded a 47-8 victory. Centenary is at home for the second time this season after flexing its offensive muscles and using a suffocating defense to cruise to a 42-7 victory over the Westgate Christian University Ravens on Sept. 6.
We're excited to be playing at home for the second time this season," said head coach Byron Dawson.
"This week we face a great challenge with ETBU coming to town. Coach Ruzicka and his staff have done an excellent job, and they bring a very talented team with several returning starters. To succeed, we must play sound, fundamental football and bring our A-game for all four quarters. We also really need the Centenary fans to show up and be loud for all four quarters."
Centenary amassed 321 yards on 73 plays and had 19 first downs at Millsaps last week and rushed 33 times for 151 yards and had 170 yards passing. Junior QB/LB Vance Feuerbacher (Plano, Texas) was all over the field for the Gents as he completed 18-25 for 115 yards through the air and rushed seven times for 32 yards and a TD.
He accounted for 147 total yards led the Gents on an 18-play, 99-yard drive and capped it with a one-yard TD run to tie the game at 7-7 early in the second quarter. He also punted seven times for 234 yards (33.4 average) with a long of 44.
Senior QB Zin'Tavious Smith (Coushatta, La.) completed 10-15 passes for 55 yards and rushed seven times for 57 yards. Sophomore Devon Strickland (Shreveport, La.) carried the ball 10 times for 30 yards, sophomore WR Christopher Jackson (Shreveport, La.) had six carries for 25 yards, and sophomore RB/WR Josh Williams (Plaucheville, La.) had three carries for seven yards.
Strickland was also the Gents' leading receiver with eight catches for 40 yards, Jackson had five catches for 20 yards, Williams had a pair of catches for seven yards, and sophomore Jay Scott (Slidell, La.) caught three balls for 26 yards. Freshman WR Theo Dunn (Gonzales, La.) had four catches for 40 yards, senior RB Obadiah Butler (Crowley, La.) caught three for 18 yards, and freshman WR Kyrie Johnson (Jefferson, Texas) had two catches for 18 yards.
The Majors drove 69 yards on eight plays in 2:22 to take an early 7-0 lead with 10:31 left in the first quarter and that lead stood until Feuerbacher's TD run tied the game at the 12:25 mark of the second quarter as freshman K/P Zane Wyss (Shreveport, La.) added the PAT to even the game at 7-7.
Wyss kicked off three times for the Gents and averaged 57.7 yards and made both of his extra points. Obadiah Butler had three kick returns for 75 yards with a long of 35 yards.
Sophomore LB Collin Watkins (West Monroe, La.) led the Gents 10 total tackles, five solo and five assisted, 1.5 tackles for loss, and one pass breakup. Freshman LB Jamayis Morrow (Tyler, Texas) had a team-high six solo stops and seven total tackles, junior DB Caden Lynch (Tyler, Texas) and freshman LB Hayden Edwards (Mansfield, Texas) each had six total tackles and Edwards had 0.5 TFL. The Gents' defense finished with five pass breakups, five TFL, and freshman TE Alex Louque (Gonzales, La.) had a fumble recovery.
