Gents Fall 56-14 At Millsaps On Saturday Night
The Centenary football team fell 56-14 to the Millsaps College Majors on Saturday evening in a non-conference contest at Harper Davis Field.
Jackson, Miss. - The Centenary football team fell 56-14 to the Millsaps College Majors on Saturday evening in a non-conference contest at Harper Davis Field.
The Gents (0-1) fell behind 28-7 at halftime and the Majors (1-1) outscored them by that same difference in the second half to secure the win.
Millsaps ran 78 total plays for 534 yards and finished with 31 first downs. The Majors rushed 53 times for 303 yards and had 231 passing yards. Centenary amassed 321 yards on 73 plays and had 19 first downs. The Gents rushed 33 times for 151 yards and had 170 yards passing.
Senior QB/LB Vance Feuerbacher (Plano, Texas) was all over the field for the Gents as he completed 18-25 for 115 yards through the air and rushed seven times for 32 yards and a TD. He accounted for 147 total yards led the Gents on an 18-play, 99-yard drive and capped it with a one-yard TD run to tie the game at 7-7 early in the second quarter. He also punted seven times for 234 yards (33.4 average) with a long of 44.
Senior QB Zin'Tavious Smith (Coushatta, La.) completed 10-15 passes for 55 yards and rushed seven times for 57 yards. Sophomore Devon Strickland (Shreveport, La.) carried the ball 10 times for 30 yards, sophomore WR Christopher Jackson (Shreveport, La.) had six carries for 25 yards, and sophomore RB/WR Josh Williams (Plaucheville, La.) had three carries for seven yards.
Strickland was also the Gents' leading receiver with eight catches for 40 yards, Jackson had five catches for 20 yards, Williams had a pair of catches for seven yards, and sophomore Jay Scott (Slidell, La.) caught three balls for 26 yards. Freshman WR Theo Dunn (Gonzales, La.) had four catches for 40 yards, senior RB Obadiah Butler (Crowley, La.) caught three for 18 yards, and freshman WR Kyrie Johnson (Jefferson, Texas) had two catches for 18 yards.
The Majors drove 69 yards on eight plays in 2:22 to take an early 7-0 lead with 10:31 left in the first quarter on a 15-yard TD pass from Grant Bizjack to Willie Elliott. That lead stood until Feuerbacher's TD run tied the game at the 12:25 mark of the second quarter as freshman K/P Zane Wyss (Shreveport, La.) added the PAT to even the game at 7-7.
Millsaps then scored three-consecutive TD's in the second quarter to take a 28-7 lead at the break as threw another TD, ran for one, and Braxton Garmon had a 10-yard TD run.
Bizjack had a 1-yard TD run to open the second-half scoring, finding the end zone with 10:33 on the clock to make it 35-7 and Jackson DeGeorge's 71-yard INT return for a TD with 1:34 remaining in the third stretched the Millsaps lead to 42-7. Dare Davis caught a 16-yard TD pass from Ian Burleson at the 8:08 mark in the fourth quarter for a 49-7 lead and the Gents' final TD of the game came on a Zin'Tavious Smith 1-yard run to cap a 15-play, 75-yard drive with 1:15 on the clock in the final quarter. Quez Goss' 51-yard TD run in the final seconds of the game made it 56-14.
Bizjack completed 12-19 passes for 184 yards and a pair of TD's and ran 11 times for 41 yards with two scores. Mitch Taylor led the Majors in rushing with 10 carries for 66 yards and nine Millsaps players had at least one carry in the game. Greg Donaldson led the Majors with three catches for 65 yards and a TD and was one of nine players to make at least one catch.
Wyss kicked off three times for the Gents and averaged 57.7 yards and made both of his extra points. Obadiah Butler had three kick returns for 75 yards with a long of 35 yards.
Sophomore LB Collin Watkins (West Monroe, La.) led the Gents 10 total tackles, five solo and five assisted, 1.5 tackles for loss, and one pass breakup. Freshman LB Jamayis Morrow (Tyler, Texas) had a team-high six solo stops and seven total tackles, junior DB Caden Lynch (Tyler, Texas) and freshman LB Hayden Edwards (Mansfield, Texas) each had six total tackles and Edwards had 0.5 TFL. The Gents' defense finished with five pass breakups, five TFL, and freshman TE Alex Louque (Gonzales, La.) had a fumble recovery.
Centenary is back home next Saturday as the Gents will face the East Texas Baptist University Tigers (2-0) in a non-conference game set for 6 PM at Atkins Field.
