The Gents raced past the Westgate Christian University Ravens by a score of 42-7 last Saturday at home while the Majors fell 50-24 at Belhaven University last weekend.
"Millsaps is a well-coached, disciplined football team, and going on the road to face them in Week two is a great challenge for our program," said Centenary head coach Byron Dawson.
"It's the kind of test that shows us where we are and what we're made of. We have a ton of respect for them, but we're excited for the opportunity. And we need Gent Nation to show up loud and proud on the road. Your energy makes a difference, and our guys feed off it," said Dawson.
The Gents led the Ravens 14-0 after the first quarter last Saturday and 21-7 at halftime and then outscored the visitors 21-0 in the second half to cruise to the win. Centenary ran 56 plays for 372 yards and had 18 first downs and the Gents' stingy defense limited the Ravens to just 82 total yards and 3-13 on third and fourth down.
Junior QB/LB Vance Feuerbacher (Plano, Texas) passed for three touchdowns, ran for one, and punted last weekend and will be counted on all season after earning First-Team All-Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference honors at linebacker last season when he also played quarterback and punted and kicked.
Junior DL D'Qavion Lemons (Shreveport, La.), a former Southwood High School star, leads the Gents' defense. He was named to the D3football.com Preseason All-America Team last month. Lemons had a stellar 2024 season as he was named to the D3football.com All-Region Team and the All-SCAC First Team.
The Gents, who return six all-conference selections from last season, were picked to finish fourth in the SCAC this season in the preseason poll and claimed a first-place vote.
Plenty of talent returns this season, headlined by five other players (in addition to Feuerbacher and Lemons) who were named All-SCAC last season - junior OL Jordan Taylor (Frisco, Texas), junior DB Bryan Washington (Wylie, Texas), junior OL Alexander Hamilton (St. Rose, La.), junior TE Isaiah King (Weatherford, Texas), and junior LB Devon Strickland (Shreveport, La.) and senior QB Zin'Tavious Smith (Coushatta, La.) finished fourth in the conference in total offense – fourth in passing and seventh in rushing, as he had 1,312 yards of total offense for the season and scored 14 touchdowns.
Feuerbacher cemented himself as one of the conference's top all-around players as he played linebacker and quarterback and punted and kicked during the season. He finished 10th in the league in total offense, averaging 36.9 yards per game, tied for 11th place in the conference in tackles and averaged 5.0 per game. He ranked second in the conference in punting (373. Average) with a long of 50 and punted 28 times. He was 4-6 on field goal attempts with a long of 38 and finished 13-15 on PAT's.
Lemons played in all 10 games last season and finished third on the team in total tackles (46) with 24 solo tackles (seventh on team) and 22 assisted stops. He was second on the team in tackles for loss (7.5) and tied for second in sacks (three). He had a team-best two forced fumbles (tied for first in SCAC) and ranked 15th in the conference in tackles, tied for second in sacks, and tied for 12th in TFL.
The Gents will be back home next weekend to face East Texas Baptist University on Sept. 20. The Gents will have a bye week on Sept. 27 and then play at Austin College on Oct. 4 in Sherman, Texas.
Centenary's first league game is Oct. 11 versus Texas Lutheran University, on Oct. 18 the Gents are at Lyon College in Batesville, Ark., and they close the month of October at home versus McMurry University for a conference contest on Oct. 25. Centenary will face Hendrix College on Nov. 1 in Conway, Ark. and are back home on Nov. 8 to face the 'Roos of Austin College again to close the regular season on Senior Night.
The SCAC will feature a new and exciting format for determining its league champion this season as all six schools (Austin College, Centenary, Hendrix, Lyon, McMurry, and TLU) will meet on Nov. 15 in Little Rock, Ark. for championship weekend held at War Memorial Stadium with an exciting day featuring three games - the No. 5 versus the No. 6 seed, the No. 3 seed versus the No. 4 seed, and the top two seeds playing each other.
