TULSA, Okla. - Nine runs scored in the first two innings by Oral Roberts doomed the Centenary baseball team on Saturday afternoon, as the Golden Eagles (19-9, 9-0) defeated the Gents 11-4 in Summit League play.
Centenary (23-8, 6-3) though did begin to scratch and claw back into the game, as junior Cliff Shepard knocked in two of the Gents' four runs. Senior Tim Deering also picked up an RBI in the sixth when he grounded out to second base.
However, Centenary couldn't score anymore, as it had just one hit the rest of the way -- a freshman Jeff Schaffert single to left field.
Sophomore Boone Whiting (4-2) got the start and pitched two innings, allowed nine runs on five hits, while walking three and striking out four. Junior Michael Tompkins threw the final six innings, fanned three and gave up just two runs.
The second game on Saturday was suspended in the bottom of the fourth and will be picked back up on Sunday at 1 p.m. The scheduled nine inning game will be played directly afterwards.
