SHREVEPORT -- After splitting a two game series against No.1 Texas A&M, Gents prepare for home opener this weekend against Northern Iowa.
Centenary will send freshman Jacob Lugo to the mound on Friday. Starters for Saturday's double header will be sophomores Stephen Tromblee and Justin Kraft, with sophomore Boone Whiting taking the mound for the start of Sunday's game. Lugo and Tromblee will both be making their first starts in the Centenary uniform, while Kraft and Whiting look to continue the success of their freshmen campaigns, a season in which both were named to the Louisville Slugger Freshmen All America Team and Whiting was a First Team All Conference selection.
The Gents second and fourth leading hitters from 2008, seniors Tim Deering and Steele Lewis, who hit .318 and .303 respectively, will get some help this season from newcomers Travis Leverson, Michael Tompkins and Tell Ross who all finished the series against A&M hitting .400 or better, while combining for three runs and three RBIs on nine hits.
For Northern Iowa this season, Brett Dougla is hitting .417 after going 5-for-12 in their opening series against UALR, with a double and two RBIs. Grant Grgurich, meanwhile, hit just .333, but had a team-best five runs off three hits with one RBI.
Play is set to begin at Shehee Stadium at 6pm Friday night, with a double header slated to begin at 1pm on Saturday and concluding with a 12pm contest on Sunday.
