Ladies Fall 79-66 To YellowJackets On Friday Night
The Centenary women's basketball team fell 79-66 to the LeTourneau University YellowJackets on Friday night in a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference contest inside the Gold Dome.
Shreveport - The Centenary women's basketball team fell 79-66 to the LeTourneau University YellowJackets on Friday night in a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference contest inside the Gold Dome.
The Ladies (2-8, 1-1 SCAC) and YellowJackets (4-7, 1-1 SCAC) were meeting for the second time this season after Centenary opened league play with a 55-50 comeback victory over LeTourneau on Dec. 2 in Longview, Texas.
LeTourneau led 26-19 after the first quarter and outscored Centenary 20-15 in the second period to take a 46-34 lead at halftime. The Ladies then edged the YellowJackets 17-15 in the third and LETU finished with an 18-15 edge in the fourth quarter to seal the win.
Centenary shot 37.0 % (27-73) from the floor for the game while LeTourneau finished 28-69 for 40.6 %. The Gents went 5-21 from beyond the arc for 23.8 % while the YellowJackets made 7-15 for 46.7 %. Both teams struggled from the free-throw line as LETU finished 16-26 for 61.5 % and Centenary went 7-17 for 41.2 %.
The Ladies won the rebounding battle, 53-44, had 15 second-chance points to LETU's 11, and had 38 points in the paint to LETU's 32. The YellowJackets edged the Ladies in fastbreak points, 11-9, and the Centenary bench outscored LETU's 26-18.
The Ladies turned the ball over 22 times which led to 30 LETU points and the YellowJackets turned it over 14 times which the Ladies turned into nine points. Centenary tallied 11 assists, seven steals, and four blocked shots and LETU finished with 17 assists, 11 steals, and blocked one shot.
Kylie Weeks led all scorers with 20 points and was one of four LETU players to reach double figures as she was joined by Mariana Espinosa and Makenzie Covey who had 12 each and Sallis Moser with 11. Espinosa grabbed a game-high 16 rebounds for an impressive double-double.
Senior G Amiyah Barrow (Baton Rouge, La.) led the Ladies with 15 points and senior F Kyra Stokes (Shreveport, La.) joined her in double figures with 11 and added a team-high 11 rebounds for a double-double.
Sophomore G Alexis Duhon (Westlake, La.) and senior G Savannah Stowers (Waller, Texas) each scored nine points.
The Ladies hit the road next weekend for two league contests beginning on Friday, Jan. 9 when they face the McMurry University War Hawks at 7:30 PM inside Kimbrell Arena in Abilene, Texas.
