Ladies Downed By Yellow Jackets
The Centenary women's basketball team lost 85-40 to the Howard Payne University Yellow Jackets on Friday evening in a non-conference game inside Brownwood Coliseum.
Brownwood, Texas - The Centenary women's basketball team lost 85-40 to the Howard Payne University Yellow Jackets on Friday evening in a non-conference game inside Brownwood Coliseum.
The Ladies (2-7) fell behind the Yellow Jackets (5-6) by a score of 35-22 at halftime and were outscored 50-18 in the second half. Centenary is now 2-4 on the road this season.
Senior G Amiyah Barrow (Baton Rouge, La.) scored seven points to lead the Ladies, senior F Layla Powell (Fort Worth, Texas) was next with six, sophomore G Alexis Duhon (Westlake, La.) and sophomore G Julissa Cabrera (Denham Springs, La.) each scored five.
Senior G Savannah Stowers (Waller, Texas), senior G Paige Stowers (Waller, Texas), and sophomore G Madison Fontenot (Mamou, La.) all scored three points apiece, and freshman F Emily Cortez (Thibodaux, La.), sophomore G Nevaeh Rivera (Rosepine, La.), and junior F Natalya Senat (Killeen, Texas) each scored two. Sophomore F Laijah Rockward (Houma, La.) and sophomore F Jordynn Patton (Orange, Texas) each scored one point.
Five Yellow Jackets reached double figures, led by 22 points from Caitlyn Panuco, and she was joined by Kaley Nicholson (17), Kate Buchanan (12), Taylor McAfee (12), and Amaris Ambriz (11).
Centenary shot 28.3 % (13-46) from the floor, 23.1 % (6-26) from beyond the arc, and 50 % (8-16) at the free-throw line. Howard Payne shot the ball well, finishing 32-61 for 52.5 % from the floor and an impressive 14-27 from 3-point range for 51.9 %. The Yellow Jackets struggled at the FT line, making only 7 of 16 attempts for 43.8 %.
The Yellow Jackets won the rebounding battle, 45-25, and finished with a 26-8 advantage in points in the paint and, 5-0 in fast break points, and 19-6 in second-chance points. The Ladies turned the ball over 19 times which led to 22 points for Howard Payne while the Yellow Jackets coughed it up 17 times which the Ladies turned into 17 points. Howard Payne finished with a 34-18 edge in bench points.
The Ladies took an early 5-2 lead in the game but the Yellow Jackets went on an 11-0 run to take a 13-5 lead with 2:31 on the clock in the first quarter. Centenary then went on an impressive run, capped by a Barrow trey at the 5:58 mark of the second quarter as the Ladies led 21-19 to finish off a 16-6 stretch. But, a 16-1 run to end the quarter gave Howard Payne a 35-22 lead headed to the final period.
Howard Payne led 47-22 at the 5:40 mark of the fourth quarter and Barrow's jumper with 4:41 left marked the Ladies' first points of the quarter and first since a Duhon FT with 1:45 left in the third quarter as a 28-1 run overwhelmed the Ladies and sealed the win for the Yellow Jackets.
The Ladies return to action on Friday, Jan. 2 (7:30 PM) against LeTourneau University at home in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play.
