Ladies Fall To Tigers In Season Opener At Home
The Centenary women's basketball team fell 76-50 to the East Texas Baptist University Tigers on Friday evening in the season opener for both teams in a non-conference game inside the Gold Dome.
Shreveport – The Centenary women's basketball team fell 76-50 to the East Texas Baptist University Tigers on Friday evening in the season opener for both teams in a non-conference game inside the Gold Dome.
The Ladies (0-1) trailed the Tigers (1-0) by a score of 19-10 after the first quarter and 36-24 at halftime, and a 20-9 advantage in the third quarter enabled ETBU to stretch their lead to 56-33 entering the final 10 minutes. The Ladies were only outscored by three points (20-17) in the final period, but the large deficit was too much to overcome.
Three Ladies reached double figures, led by a game-high 17 points from freshman G Nakaylyn Wells (Nacogdoches, Texas). Senior F Layla Powell (Fort Worth, Texas) scored 11 points and senior F Kyra Stokes (Shreveport, La.) finished with 10.
Senior G Amiyah Barrow (Baton Rouge, La.) and sophomore G Nevaeh Rivera (Rosepine, La.) each scored three points and junior F Natalya Senat (Killeen, Texas) scored four while sophomore G Julissa Cabrera (Denham Springs, La.) scored two points.
Wells played 28 minutes off the bench and finished 6-13 from the floor and 4-5 from beyond the arc with six rebounds and a steal. Stokes and Barrow each grabbed three rebounds and Senat had a pair. Rivera had three assists and three steals with a rebound and Cabrera had two assists, two rebounds, and two steals.
Four ETBU players scored in double digits, led by 14 from Tristan Smith. Macey Jones had 13 and Marley Keith and Hannah Ayala each scored 12. Smith, Jones, and Ayala all recorded double-doubles as Jones grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds and Smith and Ayala each pulled down 10.
The Ladies shot just 26.6 % (17-64) from the field for the game, 37.5 % (9-24) from 3-point range, and 77.8 % (7-9) at the free-throw line. The Tigers shot an even 50 % (27-54) from the floor for the game, 29.4 % (5-17) from beyond the arc, and 60.7 % (17-28) at the FT line.
ETBU outrebounded Centenary 53-29 and outscored the Ladies in the paint, 38-6. The Tigers scored 14 second-chance points to the Ladies' two and scored 21 points off of Centenary's 15 turnovers while the Ladies scored 13 points off of 18 ETBU miscues. The Ladies edged the Tigers, 14-13, in fast break points and ETBU outscored Centenary in bench points, 26-23. ETBU had 14 assists, eight steals, and seven blocked shots and Centenary finished with nine assists, nine steals, and no blocks.
The Ladies were down 15-2 with under two minutes remaining in the first quarter but an impressive 22-13 run cut their deficit to just four (28-24) with 2:40 left before halftime. But, an 8-0 run by the Tigers allowed them to stretch their lead to a dozen (36-24) at the break. ETBU's double-digit halftime lead coupled with a 40-26 advantage in the second half allowed them to cruise to the win.
The Ladies return to action on Monday at home with another non-conference contest versus the Jarvis Christian University Bulldogs set for 6 PM. Tickets for Monday's game are available online now at the link below:
