Ladies Set For Rematch Versus ETBU On Tuesday

The Ladies (2-5) and Tigers (8-1) will meet for the second time after squaring off to open the season back on Nov. 7 in Shreveport, a game won by the Tigers 76-50. Centenary, which opened Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play last Tuesday with a 55-50 comeback victory over the LeTourneau University YellowJackets, is 2-2 on the road this season. ETBU edged Concordia University on Saturday, 59-57, in Austin, Texas and is 3-0 at home this season.
A Look back at the Nov. 7 meeting:
In the season opener for both teams last month, the Ladies trailed the Tigers by a score of 19-10 after the first quarter and 36-24 at halftime, and a 20-9 advantage in the third quarter enabled ETBU to stretch their lead to 56-33 entering the final 10 minutes. The Ladies were only outscored by three points (20-17) in the final period, but the large deficit was too much to overcome.
Three Ladies reached double figures, led by a game-high 17 points from freshman G Nakaylyn Wells (Nacogdoches, Texas). Senior F Layla Powell (Fort Worth, Texas) scored 11 points and senior F Kyra Stokes (Shreveport, La.) finished with 10.
Centenary is averaging 57.0 PPG as a team so far this season and shooting 33.6 % from the floor, 27.3 % from 3-point range, and 72.6 % from the free-throw line. The Ladies are averaging 36.6 rebounds per game and 12.0 assists/game. Centenary is the league leader in steals (11.4/game), second in FT %, fourth in blocked shots (3.0/game), and tied for sixth in assists (12.0). The Ladies are also sixth in FG % defense (36.6), seventh in both scoring defense (66.4 PPG) and third in 3-point FG % defense (24.2). The Ladies, sixth in turnover margin and seventh in assist to turnover ratio, are 70th nationally in FT %.

Scoring: Nakaylyn Wells – 13.0 PPG
Rebounding: Kyra Stokes - 6.1/game
Assists: Wells – 3.4
Blocks: Freshman F Emily Cortez (Thibodaux, La.) – 1.1/game
Steals: Sophomore G Nevaeh Rivera (Rosepine, La.) – 2.3/game
The rookie Wells is off to an impressive start as she ranks eighth in the league in scoring, seventh in assists, fifth in assist to turnover ratio, top 10 in FT % (76.5) and eighth in minutes played. Wells has scored in double figures in six of seven games, is shooting 37.6 from the floor, and averages 5.4 rebounds/game – tied for second on team.
Stokes, tied for 17th in the league in rebounding, is tied for fifth in the league in blocked shots (1.0) game and is averaging 6.7 PPG with pair of double-digit scoring performances. Cortez ranks fourth in the conference in blocked shots (1.1) and averages 3.7 PPG and 1.7 rebounds/game.
Rivera is sixth in the conference in steals and tied for 12th in the league in assists (2.7) and averages 5.0 PPG, 3.0 rebounds/game and shoots 75 % from the FT line. Layla Powell is having another solid season as she averages 7.7 PPG, 2.7 rebounds/game and shoots 76.5 % from the FT line, good for top 10 in the conference. Powell has reached double figures three times and is tied for 10th in the league in 3-point FG made (1.9/game).
Senior G Amiyah Barrow (Baton Rouge, La.) led all scorers with 13 points in the Ladies' comeback victory over LeTourneau and hit a tiebreaking 3-pointer with 42 seconds left to give the Ladies a 53-50 lead and was 6-13 from the floor in 32 minutes with four rebounds. Barrow is averaging 8.3 PPG, 3.6 rebounds/game, 1.3 assists/game and has three double-digit scoring performances.
Sophomore G Julissa Cabrera (Denham Springs, La.) is 10th in the league 3-point FG % (38.9) as she has made 7 of 18 beyond the arc this season, is tied for ninth in steals (1.9/game) and averages 5.0 PPG, 2.0 rebounds/game and 1.4 assists/game.
The Ladies will face Howard Payne University on Dec. 12 in Brownwood, Texas before returning to SCAC play with a rematch versus LeTourneau at home on Friday, Jan. 2 at 7:30 PM.
