Ladies Fall To 'Roos On Friday Night
The Centenary women's basketball team fell 78-54 to the Austin College 'Roos on Friday night in a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference game inside Hughey Gymnasium.
Sherman, Texas - The Centenary women's basketball team fell 78-54 to the Austin College 'Roos on Friday night in a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference game inside Hughey Gymnasium.
The Ladies (2-11, 1-4 SCAC) lost their sixth game in a row and dropped to 2-7 on the road this season. The 'Roos (6-8, 3-2 SCAC) snapped a three-game losing streak and improved to 3-4 at home. The 'Roos have now won the last five meetings between the teams.
Austin College led 14-13 after the first quarter and outscored Centenary 24-17 to lead 38-30 at halftime. The 'Roos finished with a 22-13 advantage in the third and outscored the Ladies 18-11 in the fourth period to cruise to the win.
The Ladies shot 36 % (18-50) from the floor for the game while the 'Roos finished 29-61 for 47.5 %. Centenary was 5-13 from beyond the arc for 38.5 % and 13-19 from the free-throw line (68.4 %). Austin College finished 7-15 (46.7 %) from 3-point range and 13-20 (65 %) from the FT line.
The 'Roos outrebounded the Ladies 40-32 and finished with advantages in points in the paint (42-22), second-chance points (15-6), and points off turnovers (22-12). Centenary turned the ball over 23 times and Austin College turned it over 16 times. The Ladies recorded eight assists, six steals, and two blocked shots while the 'Roos tallied 21 assists, 11 steals, and one blocked shot. Centenary's bench scored 13 points and Austin College's contributed 30.
Senior F Kyra Stokes (Shreveport, La.) led the Ladies with a season-high 13 points as she scored in double figures for the fourth time this season. Stokes played 24 minutes and was 5-9 from the floor and 2-4 from the FT line with a trey, a blocked shot, and team-high eight rebounds.
Senior G Amiyah Barrow (Baton Rouge, La.) scored 11 points as she reached double digits for the sixth time this season. She was 5-11 from the floor and 1-2 at the FT line in 32 minutes with four rebounds and three assists.
Sophomore G Julissa Cabrera (Denham Springs, La.) scored eight points, senior G Savannah Stowers (Waller, Texas) scored seven, and sophomore G Alexis Duhon (Westlake, La.) added five. Junior F Natalya Senat (Killeen, Texas) scored four and sophomore G Madison Fontenot (Mamou, La.) and sophomore F Laijah Rockward (Houma, La.) each scored three.
Cabrera was 2-6 from the floor, 3-4 at the FT line, and 1-1 from beyond the arc in 29 minutes with three assists, three rebounds, and two steals. Stowers was 2-3 from the floor, 1-2 from beyond the arc, and 2-4 at the FT line in 20 minutes with two rebounds. Duhon played 24 minutes and was 2-2 at the FT line with a trey, a rebound, and a steal.
Senat was 1-4 from the floor and 2-2 at the FT line with six rebounds and a blocked shot in 23 minutes., Fontenot was 1-1 from the floor and 1-1 from beyond the arc in 13 minutes with four boards, two steals, and one assist. Rockward played just three minutes off the bench and was 1-2 from the FG and 1-1 at the FT line.
Lexi Martin led all scorers with 20 points and was one of three Austin College players to scored in double figures as she was joined by Avory Miller (11) and Brooklyn Matthews (10). Twelve Austin College players scored in the game and six players scored four+ points each.
The Ladies will wrap up the weekend at the University of Dallas on Saturday (6 PM) in Irving, Texas.
