Ladies Pick Up First Win Of Season 70-67 At MUW
The Centenary women's basketball team defeated the Mississippi University for Women (MUW) Owls 70-67 on Thursday afternoon in a non-conference game inside Pohl Gymnasium.
Columbus, Miss. - The Centenary women's basketball team defeated the Mississippi University for Women (MUW) Owls 70-67 on Thursday afternoon in a non-conference game inside Pohl Gymnasium.
The Ladies (1-2) gave first-year head coach Rennie Bailey his first victory as head coach of the Maroon and White as the Owls fell to 0-3 on the season.
Centenary outscored MUW 19-14 in the first quarter and 24-13 in the second period to take a 43-27 lead at halftime. The Owls then outscored the Ladies 15-11 in the third and 25-16 in the fourth as Centenary held on for the win. The game featured 10 ties and six lead changes.
The Ladies shot the ball well, finishing 27-65 from the floor for 41.5 % while the Owls were just 21-68 for 30.9 %. Centenary was 6-19 (31.6 %) from 3-point range and MUW finished 5-21 for 23.8 %. The Ladies made 10-15 free throws for 66.7 % and the Owls were 20-25 for 80 %. The Owls outrebounded the Ladies 49-43
Centenary won the battle in the paint, 32-22, finished with 22 fast break points to 13 for MUW and the Ladies finished with an overwhelming advantage in bench points (40-8). The Ladies turned the ball over 31 times which led to 26 points for the Owls while MUW turned it over 27 times leading to 34 points for the Ladies. MUW had 10 second-chance points and Centenary had four. The Ladies finished with 17 assists, 17 steals and six blocked shots and the Owls had 16 steals, 14 assists, and four blocked shots.
The Ladies had four players reach double figures, led by 11 points each from senior G Amiyah Barrow (Baton Rouge, La.) and freshman G Nakaylyn Wells (Nacogdoches, Texas). Sophomore G Julissa Cabrera (Denham Springs, La.) and freshman F Emily Cortez (Thibodaux, La.) each had 10. Cabrera matched her career high which she scored last season at Austin College and the rookie Cortez reached double digits for the first time.
Sophomore G Alexis Duhon (Westlake, La.) scored nine, senior F Kyra Stokes (Shreveport, La.) had eight, and senior F Layla Powell (Fort Worth, Texas) added seven. Sophomore G Nevaeh Rivera (Rosepine, La.) and freshman F/C Dajalee LeBlanc (Crowley, La.) each had two.
Mia Bowen and Conley Langford combined to score 47 of the Owls' 67 points and four players scored the other 20. Jakayla Smith and Fantasia Wilson each scored six, Trinity Hamilton had five, and Keayra Hughes had three.
Stokes grabbed eight rebounds to lead the Ladies, Wells had seven, and Barrow and Duhon each had six. Cabrera had five, Powell three and LeBlanc grabbed a pair. Wells dished out a game-high seven assists and Powell had three assists and two steals. Barrow had two assists, two steals, and a blocked shot. Rivera finished with three assists, two steals, and a rebound. Duhon added four steals and an assist.
The Ladies held a 61-51 lead with 6:24 remaining but the Owls scored seven in a row to cut their deficit to three with 4:07 on the clock. A jumper by Bowen tried it at 65-65 with 1:16 left but Powell drained a trey to put the Ladies up 68-65 at the 1:04 mark. Bowen tipped in a missed shot with 25 seconds left to make it 68-67 and Wells made a pair of FT's with 21 seconds remaining to make it 70-67 and seal the win.
Centenary returns to action on Friday with another non-conference contest against Millsaps College set for 6 PM in Jackson, Miss.
