Bulldogs Rally Late To Complete Comeback Win Over Ladies

Shreveport – The Centenary women's basketball team held a late lead over Jarvis Christian University in a non-conference contest but the Bulldogs rallied to win 59-52 on Monday evening at the Gold Dome.
The Ladies (0-2) led by seven points (52-45) with 6:34 remaining, but the Bulldogs (1-3) finished the game on a 14-0 run to seal the comeback win.
The Bulldogs edged the Ladies 19-16 in the first quarter and each team scored 14 points in the second as the visitors took a 33-30 lead into the halftime locker room. The Ladies then outscored the Bulldogs 14-10 in the third period to take a 44-43 lead into the fourth. Jarvis Christian, though, outscored Centenary 16-8 in the final 10 minutes and finished on the 14-0 run to record the road victory.
Neither team shot the ball well as the Ladies finished just 33.3 % (21-63) from the floor and the Bulldogs were 29.3 % (17-58). Centenary made only seven of its 31 attempts from 3-point range (22.6 %) and Jarvis Christian was 2-7 for 28.6 %. The visitors finished with a decisive advantage at the free-throw line, making 23-36 for 63.9 % while Centenary went to the line only four times in the game and made three for 75 %.
The Bulldogs outrebounded the Ladies 53-37 and had 18 second-chance points to just three for Centenary. Jarvis Christian won the battle in the paint, 30-26, and had seven fastbreak points while the Ladies had six. Centenary relied heavily on its bench, as its reserves contributed 19 points while Jarvis Christian backups provided only four points.
The Bulldogs committed 16 turnovers and the Ladies had 15 miscues. The visitors turned Centenary's 15 turnovers into 10 points and the Ladies finished with 16 points off of the Bulldogs' 16 turnovers.
Freshman G Nakaylyn Wells (Nacogdoches, Texas), senior F Layla Powell (Fort Worth, Texas), and senior F Kyra Stokes (Shreveport, La.) each scored 10 points to lead the Ladies and senior G Amiyah Barrow (Baton Rouge, La.) just missed double digits as she finished with nine.
Sophomore G Alexis Duhon (Westlake, La.) added seven, sophomore G Nevaeh Rivera (Rosepine, La.) had four and junior F Natalya Senat (Killeen, Texas) chipped in two.
Jacy Reese led all scorers with 23 points and was one of two Bulldogs to reach double figures as Shamya Champ had 19 as the duo scored 42 of Jarvis Christian's 59 points. Sidney Minor had nine and Yvonne Forman and Carmela Hayden each had four. Champ also grabbed a game-high 15 rebounds for an impressive double-double which included two assists and a pair of steals. Reese had seven rebounds and three assists and four Bulldogs grabbed at least five rebounds.
Stokes just missed a double-double as she led the Ladies with nine rebounds, Powell had six, and Barrow and Rivera each had five. Duhon and freshman G Nakaylyn Wells (Nacogdoches, Texas) each had four boards. Senat grabbed two rebounds and had one steal. Wells, who scored a game-high 17 points in her debut on Friday, added four assists and four rebounds.
Centenary returns to action on Thursday with another non-conference contest against the Mississippi University for Women (MUW) Owls (0-2) set for NOON in Columbus, Miss.
