Centenary Athletics: Weekend Preview - March 27-29
“Spring has Sprung” and that means it is once again another busy weekend in the world of Centenary Athletics.
Shreveport – "Spring has Sprung" and that means it is once again another busy weekend in the world of Centenary Athletics.
Five teams will be in action this weekend, four on the road and one at home. BASEBALL is the lone squad at home as the Diamond Gents will face the Austin College 'Roos in a three-game series in Southern Collegiate Athletic play at Shehee Stadium with the series beginning on Friday with a single game set for 6 PM. The series concludes on Saturday with a doubleheader at 1 PM.
The Diamond Gents are 11-14 and 6-9 in conference play and are halfway through their conference schedule and are aiming to work their way up the standings and get into position to earn a SCAC Tournament berth. Austin College enters the weekend at 9-12 overall and 9-9 in SCAC play. Centenary is currently tied for eighth place with the University of Dallas. The Diamond Gents won two of three games against the Crusaders last weekend in Irving, Texas.
SOFTBALL
The Ladies (12-11, 10-5 SCAC) completed a three-game series sweep over the University of Dallas in SCAC play with a 6-1 win in the series finale last weekend at the Centenary Softball Complex.
Centenary swept the Crusaders in a doubleheader to begin the series, winning game one 8-0 in five innings and 4-1 in game two. The Ladies have won a season-best six games in a row and are now 10-2 at home. The current winning streak is Centenary's longest since winning eight in a row last season.
The Ladies are on the road this weekend to face Austin College (4-15, 4-13 SCAC) in Sherman, Texas and then return home April 2-3 to face Texas Lutheran. Centenary, which has completed half of its league schedule, is currently in fourth place in the conference standings.
The Ladies and 'Roos begin the series on Friday with a single game set for 7 PM and a DH on Saturday at NOON.
MEN'S AND WOMEN'S TRACK & FIELD
The Ladies and Gents are off to a fast start to their seasons as they prepare for the annual SCAC Championships next month.
This past Saturday in the Belhaven Invitational in Jackson, Miss., the Gents' relay team of junior Christian Cormier (Lafayette, La.), sophomore Cameron Hobley (Coushatta, La.), sophomore Dwayne Mills Jr. (Slidell, La.), and sophomore Jay Scott (Slidell, La.) ran a new school record time of 40.45 in the 4 x 100 meter relay which is the fastest time in the country in D3 so far this season.
The Ladies and Gents will compete in the Leon Johnson NSU Invitational on Saturday in Natchitoches, La. followed by the Carl Knight Lumberjack Invitational April 2-3 in Nacogdoches, Texas, and then the Bryan Phillips Invitational on April 11 in Searcy, Ark. The 2026 SCAC Championships will be held April 24-26 in Abilene, Texas and hosted by McMurry.
GYMNASTICS
Five Centenary gymnasts will compete as individuals this weekend, Friday through Sunday, in the 2026 Women's Collegiate Gymnastics National Invitational Championships on the campus of West Chester University in West Chester, Pa.
The five Ladies who qualified are sophomore Skyla Cruz (El Paso, Texas), senior Amy Foret (Bedford, Texas), senior Claire Flores (Oklahoma City, Okla.), sophomore Anna Ichiba (Murphy, Texas), and junior Olivia Williams (Cape Coral, Fla.).
Individuals who qualified for the national championships were determined by their National Qualifying Score (NQS) in respective events. Cruz qualified on beam, Foret on beam, floor, and Vault, Flores on floor and vault, Ichiba on beam, and Williams on floor.
The five Ladies will compete in Session 1 on Friday at 2 PM eastern time. Cruz will be making her debut at nationals, Flores and Ichiba are competing for the second year in a row, Williams is competing for the third season in a row, and Foret for the fourth time. For the individual competitors, the top five individual scores on each event from each session will advance to the individual finals on Sunday, March 29 at 1 p.m.
