SHERVEPORT, La. - The Centenary baseball team improved to 23-9 on the season and 14-3 in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference action with 4-3 victory over Austin College on Saturday afternoon at Shehee Stadium.
Layton Tromba (6-3) tossed his seventh complete game in the win, including a no-hitter through five innings. The Bossier City, La., native fanned four in the decision while allowing just five hits on the afternoon en route to the win.
Tromba received solid, defensive support in the field, including a Nic Parrott diving grab in center and a Marc Martinez snag down the right field line to keep the Roos off the bases in the earlier frames.
Tyler Clakley and Christian Sebastien lead the Maroon and White at the plate with multiple hits kick-starting the Gents scoring output in the opening two innings.
Clakley drove in the first run of the affair with a triple to left center scoring Ryan Gasporra who singled just one at-bat prior. Craig Littleman followed with a sacrifice fly to score Clakley. The Tyler, Texas, native added a pair of RBI in the second frame with another extra base hit to left center - this time a double to score Matt Creamer and Sebastien.
AC attempted a rally in the seventh inning with three runs, but couldn't overcome the Gents' lead. Colt Herron provided the biggest blow for the Roos with a two-run, double to left center. Todd Takabuki added the lone other Austin run with a single to right that plated Herron.
Blaine Tew (1-7) was saddled with the loss for Austin with six hits allowed in six innings pitched. Tew walked five and struck out three in the loss. Marshall Korn tossed the final two innings allowing just one hit in limited action.
Centenary closes out the series with Austin College at 1 p.m. tomorrow at Shehee Stadium. The Gents will honor six seniors following the conclusion of the game.
